Yedangho Sculpture Park, harmonizing with the Yedang Reservoir widely known as a natural tourist attraction, was established on November 16, 2004, rapidly becoming another popular destination. The park is located overlooking the vast Yedang Reservoir (Yedangho) and, as its name suggests, features numerous sculptures. Covering approximately 500 pyeong, the park was created with participation from well-known mid-career artists nationwide and contest artists, and is known to have high artistic and value ratings. The works express themes such as nature, humanity, love, including Yesan apples. Combined with the outdoor performance hall, campground, and walking trails within the Yedang tourist area developed so far, the layout of the works evokes a Western-style painting, earning continuous praise from visitors and artists.
Yesan Imjonseong Fortress is a Baekje-era mountain fortress built on Bongsusan near the west of Yedang Reservoir and is selected as the 4th scenic spot of Yesan. The outer walls are built of stone with the interior filled with earth, forming a teomoesik (table-like) stony mountain fortress with a circumference of about 4 km, height about 2.5 m, and width about 3.5 m, boasting large scale. In 660 (the 20th year of King Uija), when Baekje fell to the Tang-Silla allied forces, generals Boksin, Dochim, and Heukchisangji used this fortress as a base for Baekje revival for over three years. It is one of the largest Baekje mountain fortresses and has provided a significant foundation for fortress studies. It was designated as a historic site in 1963 in recognition of these values. Visitors can reach this site by hiking on trails through Bongsusan Natural Recreation Forest or by vehicle along forest roads from Masari in the southwest. From the summit, you can see Yedang Reservoir as well as Oseosan, Baegwolsan, and Gayasan mountains. In autumn, beautiful fall foliage can be enjoyed.
Sudeoksa is a temple located on the southern foothills of Deoksungsan (495m) in the Charyeong Mountains near Deoksan Hot Springs. It is one of the largest temples of the Jogye Order in the Naepo region of Chungnam and serves as the main temple of the Jogye Order's 7th district. Founded in the 6th century during the Baekje era, it boasts nearly 1,500 years of history and is renowned as the top scenic spot in Yesan-gun. The founding legend tells of a young man who fell in love with a maiden whose marriage condition was the building of a temple. After completing the temple, when the man held the maiden’s hand, she disappeared, later revealed to be an incarnation of Gwanseumbosal (Avalokitesvara). Sudeoksa has undergone multiple renovations during the Goryeo, Joseon, and Japanese colonial periods. The temple houses cultural assets from the Baekje to Joseon eras, including the National Treasure Daeungjeon Hall, treasures like the Nosanabul Gwaebultang and the Myobeop Yeonhwagyong sutra, and numerous Chungcheongnam-do designated cultural properties such as the three-story pagoda and seven-story pagoda. The Geunyeok Seongbogwan preserves various Buddhist artifacts. The site also features the thatched house where painter Lee Ungno (1904-1989) worked, Lee Ungno Seonsaeksaji (Sudeok Inn), and Seon Art Museum showcasing works by Lee Ungno and modern artists alongside Buddhist art. The Temple Stay program offers diverse programs tailored to demand and preferences.
