Jucheon Market is a traditional five-day market located in Jucheon-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do, held on the 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th, 21st, and 26th of each month. It has a long history dating back to the Joseon Dynasty when the market was first established. Various goods are sold, including local specialties of Yeongwol Jucheon such as beans, chili peppers, potatoes, deodeok, muknamul, acorn jelly, as well as old farming tools, flowerpots, rice cakes, and vegetables. The Jucheon five-day market offers seasonal items: in spring, wild edible greens such as shepherd’s purse, wild chives, chamnamul, gomchwi, and jundaengari collected from around Jucheon stimulate spring flavors; in summer, glutinous corn, potatoes, olchangmuk, small squid noodles, and freshwater fish and freshwater snails caught from the Donggang, Seogang, and Jucheongang Rivers are popular. In autumn, locally produced peppers, beans, red beans, corn, and special products like wild grapes, wild kiwi, and prickly ash—hard to find in urban areas—are available; in winter, mountain goat meat brought down from the mountains, acorn jelly, buckwheat pancakes, and ballangju made from corn attract attention.
