Busan Nanhang is located right next to Busan Port and includes the harbor reaching from Yeongdo Bridge to Nanhang Bridge. It encompasses the iconic Jagalchi Market, Busan Cooperative Fish Market, and beyond them, Namhang-dong in Yeongdo. Namhang-dong has many large and small shipyards primarily for ship repairs. During the Korean War evacuation period, many people settled here, enduring and living for a long time in a small village imbued with the scent of human life. On the opposite side, in Nambumin-dong, is the largest seafood wholesale market in Korea, the Busan Cooperative Fish Market, filled with cold storage and processing plants. Next to it, Jagalchi Market borders the harbor where fresh seafood can be bought cheaply and tasted, making it a bustling spot for locals and tourists alike. At the entrance of Busan Nanhang stands Nanhang Bridge, connecting Annam-dong in Seo-gu, Busan to Yeongseon-dong in Yeongdo-gu. Both ends of the bridge have elevators and stairs, allowing visitors to go up and enjoy a magnificent view of Busan's open sea. It has become well-known as one of Busan's best scenic spots, attracting many visitors. Beneath Nanhang Bridge, a waterfront park has been developed where local residents relax on mats, and many anglers visit to enjoy fishing.
This place was the starting point and driving force of the revival of the Korean shipbuilding industry, where the essential process of removing corroded paint from ships by hammering it off, called 'kkangkangi,' took place, hence sometimes called Kkangkkangi-gil. The Kkangkkangi Art Village on Surijoseonso-gil is a sock-shaped village located across from Jagalchi Market, where Yeongdo Bridge and Namhang Bridge meet, traditionally known as a shipyard village. In the late 19th century, the 'Tanaka Shipyard,' which built the first ship equipped with a motor in Korea, was established here, making it the birthplace of modern shipbuilding in South Korea. During the 1970s and 80s, it became a mecca of ship repair industry amid the boom of deep-sea fishing. Although not as prosperous as before due to the decline of ship repair, about 10 ship repair yards and over 200 industrial and ship parts companies remain in the village. Additionally, the village houses the site of the former Tanaka Shipyard, a ship experience center, a village museum, and a village workshop.
