Located in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, Yeongdo Bridge is one of Busan's representative landmarks and an important bridge connecting Yeongdo and the Busan mainland. Opened in 1973, this bridge is a historic structure that has been part of Busan's industrial development and has stood with the local people for many years. The most distinctive feature of Yeongdo Bridge is its rotating pier structure, which allows the bridge to open at scheduled times for large ships to pass through. It is also famous for its beautiful night view, as the bridge and its surroundings are illuminated at night, creating a romantic atmosphere. Crossing Yeongdo Bridge offers views of the sea alongside Busan Port, making it a great spot to experience the maritime city of Busan. Yeongdo Bridge stands as a symbolic place encompassing Busan's history, industry, and beautiful scenery.
This place was the starting point and driving force of the revival of the Korean shipbuilding industry, where the essential process of removing corroded paint from ships by hammering it off, called 'kkangkangi,' took place, hence sometimes called Kkangkkangi-gil. The Kkangkkangi Art Village on Surijoseonso-gil is a sock-shaped village located across from Jagalchi Market, where Yeongdo Bridge and Namhang Bridge meet, traditionally known as a shipyard village. In the late 19th century, the 'Tanaka Shipyard,' which built the first ship equipped with a motor in Korea, was established here, making it the birthplace of modern shipbuilding in South Korea. During the 1970s and 80s, it became a mecca of ship repair industry amid the boom of deep-sea fishing. Although not as prosperous as before due to the decline of ship repair, about 10 ship repair yards and over 200 industrial and ship parts companies remain in the village. Additionally, the village houses the site of the former Tanaka Shipyard, a ship experience center, a village museum, and a village workshop.
Namhang Market was formed in the 1960s as people began to gather and live in Yeongdo, Busan, following the Korean War (6.25). It boasts the third-largest scale in Busan. With over 60 years of tradition, Namhang Market combines the charm of a traditional market with modern and comfortable facilities, making shopping convenient. It mainly handles agricultural products, seafood, and livestock products that are locally delivered or directly grown. The market has a balanced distribution of stores selling side dishes like fish cakes and kimchi, daily necessities, clothing, and miscellaneous goods. Many visitors come because good products can be purchased at low prices. Selected in 2013 for the cultural tourism market development project, it has conducted various cultural activities, hosting market music festivals and market theater festivals, transforming the market into a cultural space where local residents and merchants can interact. It is also good to visit along with the famous Samjin Fish Cake shop nearby.
Bongnae Market naturally formed during the Japanese colonial period and was once a large traditional market. However, it shrank in size when Busan Bridge was built, partially incorporating the market into the road, and further declined after Namhang Market opened across the street. Despite this, food companies with over 50 years of history and tradition, such as Samjin Food and Seongsil Food, continue to be loved by locals and maintain Bongnae Market's presence. In 2006, the market underwent environmental improvement projects that modernized various facilities, and it actively works to revitalize the market through sisterhood ties with nearby enterprises like Daeseon Shipbuilding. In 2017, it was selected as a cultural tourism market and has since promoted cultural space creation, tourism product development, cultural content development, and cultural performances to enhance its distinct resources. Bongnae Market also hosts the main branch of Samjin Eomuk, a historic fish cake manufacturer, attracting many tourists. Nearby attractions include Yeongdo Huinyeoul Culture Village, Yeongdo Bridge, and Kkangkkangi Art Village.
Located in Yeongdo-gu, Busan광역시, the Samjin Eomuk Experience & History Science Museum offers visitors a chance to explore the history of Busan eomuk while providing various attractions and engaging programs. The first and second floors serve as experience spaces, while the third floor houses the history science museum where historical and scientific information related to eomuk can be found. As a leading experience center and history science museum for eomuk culture, it operates interactive programs guided by professional instructors, including Mongtteok Okonomi, DIY Eomuktang, and pizza eomuk, allowing visitors to make handmade eomuk dishes. Visitors can also taste the eomuk dishes they prepare on-site.
