Taejongdae in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, is a tourist destination with beautiful natural scenery and rich historical significance. It is a representative scenic spot of Busan, boasting a unique landscape with rugged rocks and dense forests combined. Taejongdae has an observatory where visitors can enjoy the view of the distant sea. Additionally, there are various walking trails and coastal paths throughout the Taejongdae area, offering visitors a chance to heal in nature. It is also a popular site because of historical landmarks such as the Taejongdae Lighthouse and Taejongsa Temple. At Taejongdae, visitors can also enjoy the Danubi train, making it a recommended weekend outing spot for children and families.
Taejongsa Temple is a Buddhist temple located within Taejongdae Park, established in 1976 as a temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. In September 1983, through the introduction of Korean student Oh Byung-moon from Sri Lanka, the temple received a relic of the Buddha's bone and two Bodhi trees from the Sri Lankan government, which are enshrined and nurtured here. Within the temple grounds, about 3,000 hydrangea bushes form a large cluster, blooming fully in spring to create a floral spectacle. Monk Doseong, who enjoys gardening, collected and planted hydrangeas over 40 years from renowned domestic and international mountain temples, thus forming this hydrangea habitat. Since 2006, an annual Hydrangea Festival is held in early July. Additionally, special events and rituals such as the Takbal Dharma Assembly, Baekjung, Seongdo-il Dharma Assembly, and regular prayers are held.
Yeongdo Lighthouse, which first lit its light in December 1906, was called 'Mokdo Lighthouse' at that time. It was established for the safety of troop and military supply transport ships necessary for Japan's continental expansion. Later, in 1948, it was renamed Jeolyeongdo Lighthouse and changed to Yeongdo Lighthouse in 1974. When Yeongdo Lighthouse first lit in December 1906, it used an oil incandescent lamp, but now it uses a 220V, 1200W halogen lamp. The lighthouse light blinks three times every 18 seconds on an 11m-high concrete tower. The light reaches a distance of 24 miles, as much as 44 km. It is also equipped with a navigation identification system that can track vessels over 300 tons on a screen. In 2002, the Busan Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office undertook a major remodeling, completed in August 2004. Through this, Yeongdo Lighthouse was reborn as a maritime cultural space with a marine library, gallery, and more.
