Osaekryeong is a 1,004-meter-high mountain pass located on the boundary of Seomyeon, Yangyang-gun, and Bukmyeon and Girinmyeon, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do. The pass, which lies at the border of Naeseorak and Namseorak, is called Osaekryeong by Yangyang and Hangyeryeong by Inje. In the late Joseon Dynasty, the practical scholar Lee Jung-hwan listed six well-known passes of Gangwon-do in 'Taekriji,' naming Osaekryeong as the best among them. Historically, Osaekryeong was a mountain pass used to transport daily necessities from Yangyang (Yeongdong) to Inje (Yeongseo) and was a rugged route that Yangyang residents had to cross when traveling to Seoul. The popular song 'Hangyeryeong,' centered on Osaekryeong, reflects the sorrows and joys of those who traveled this path. In 1981, road expansion construction led to the opening of the Hangyeryeong Road connecting Yangyang and Inje. Today, National Route 44’s Osaekryeong pass is considered Gangwon-do’s best driving course and a tourist attraction where visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of Seoraksan. It is the starting point for the shortest hiking trail to Daecheongbong, Seoraksan’s highest peak, and also the trailhead for the path to the summit of Jumbong Mountain.
Located 20km west of Yangyang and 7.5km southeast from Hangyeryeong, Osaek Mineral Springs emerge from three rock beds along a stream, containing iron and carbonated water. The mineral springs in Osaek-ri are a natural monument, discovered around 1500 by a monk from Osaekseoksa Temple. Named after the five-colored flowers growing behind Seongguksa Temple, Osaek Mineral Springs discharge about 1,500 liters daily of iron-rich water. The springs are also famous for their scenic surroundings and their location along the trail to the summit of Seoraksan.
