Gyeonggi-do Yangpyeong-gun · Today’s itinerary

Becoming a romantic traveler along a beautiful riverside

Standing quietly beside the silently flowing river, your heart becomes calm, reflecting the river itself. Take a walk at Dumulmeori, where the Bukhan River and Namhan River meet, and explore Semiwon, blooming with lotuses and wildflowers. Hwang Sun-won Literature Village Sonagi Village is a romantic travel spot that evokes memories of a distant first love. Visiting Jungmisan Observatory, where you can admire a sky full of stars at night, is also a special experience.

Dumulmeori is the place where the Bukhan River, flowing from Geumgangsan, and the Namhan River, originating from Geomryongso at the foothills of Geumdaebong in Gangwon-do, meet, marking the beginning of the Han River. Early morning mist, sunrise, yellow sailboats, and a zelkova tree over 400 years old blend harmoniously in Yangsu-ri Dumulmeori. It is a place that transforms beautifully through the four seasons and is selected as one of the must-visit spots in Korea by Korean Tourism 100. Known as Han River's No. 1 Scenic Spot (Dumulgyeong) and a filming location for various dramas and movies, it attracts numerous domestic and international tourists, serving as a representative ecotourism site in South Korea. The beautiful scenery of Dumulmeori has been famous since the Joseon Dynasty, preserved through Lee Geonpil's 'Two Rivers' Seungyudo' and Jeong Seon's 'Dokbaektan,' transcending time. It is an ecological treasure that should be passed on to future generations as a beautiful heritage of both South Korea and Yangpyeong.

Semiwon is a garden of water and flowers surrounded on three sides by Paldang Lake, featuring about 270 species of plants including aquatic plants in the traditional East Asian garden style. It offers various sights to see. In June 2019, it was designated as Gyeonggi-do's first local garden. It is known that Jeong Yak-yong built a ferry bridge across the Namhan River in the Yangju area, where the river narrows, at the site of today’s Semiwon. It also includes the Lotus Museum, water lily greenhouse, Seokchangwon, Sangchunwon, and various facilities and experiential events, making it a garden of water and flowers that has become a space breathing the history and cultural arts of Korea.

Sonagi Village is a theme park created through the collaboration of Yangpyeong-gun and Kyung Hee University to honor the life and literary spirit of writer Hwang Sun-won. Among the works of Hwang Sun-won, who built a shining monument in Korean literature with 104 poems, 104 short stories, 1 novella, and 7 novels, the background of the beloved national novel 'Sonagi' is realistically recreated here. The site features the Hwang Sun-won Literature Hall, a space where visitors can glimpse the writer's life and literary world. The hall has three exhibition rooms displaying Hwang Sun-won's personal belongings and works, and outdoors there is Sonagi Square, where an artificial rain shower falls. There are also experience zones reproducing the settings of the novel 'Sonagi,' such as the Stepping Stones, Reed Dano Trail, Calf Field, and Wildflower Village. Especially notable is the Digital 'Sonagi' Walk immersive video experience hall, opened in 2021. It is the first literary museum in Korea to introduce immersive content, designed so visitors become the protagonists of 'Sonagi' and directly experience the story. Utilizing cutting-edge IT technology, it vividly realizes scenes from the novel, allowing visitors to experience the emotions and messages of Hwang Sun-won's literature through all five senses. Additional facilities include the Hometown Forest and the Forest of Sun and Moon themed around Hwang’s other novels, and the Love Stage for outdoor performances. Hwang Sun-won is renowned for his simple and refined style, diverse technical devices exemplifying the aesthetics of the novel, a humble yet intense humanistic spirit, and a deep love for traditional Korean life. His novels are especially noted for their lyrical beauty, regarded as one of the highest artistic achievements literature can pursue. While focusing on lyrical beauty can risk neglecting historical dimensions, Hwang's literature successfully overcomes this challenge.
