Guryongsa Temple was founded by Uisang Daesa in the 8th year of King Munmu of Silla (668). It was established by filling a pond inhabited by nine dragons at the site of the Daeungjeon Hall, hence originally named Guryongsa (九龍寺). However, during the Joseon period, it was renamed Guryongsa (龜龍寺) relating to the legend of the Turtle Rock. According to the 'Chiaksan Guryongsa Site,' it is also recorded that the temple was founded by the Silla-era monk Doseon Guksa. Currently, eaves tiles inscribed with the 45th year of King Kangxi have been excavated, indicating that Guryongsa was rebuilt in the 32nd year of King Sukjong (1706). To the left and right in front of Daeungjeon Hall are monk quarters including Seosangwon, Bogwangru, Jeokmukdang, and Simgeomdang, as well as Wontongmun Gate, Guksadan Altar, Sacheonwangmun Gate, Beomjonggak Bell Pavilion, and Eungjinjeon Hall. At the temple entrance is a cluster of stupas from the Joseon Dynasty, alongside the Turtle Rock and the dragon pond under the waterfall, which tell the temple's legend. There is also a Hwangjang Geumpyo from the Joseon period, marking a prohibition against unauthorized logging in the pine forests around Chiaksan.

Wonju Hakgok Village 1

Hakgok Village is named for its valley where the Namcheon stream and Hakgok reservoir flow from the slopes of Chiaksan and Maehwasan, naturally coexisting with various fish and migratory birds, and frequented often by cranes. It is a village with Sureuneomerae, a pass crossed by King Taejong (Yi Bang-won) who rode a cart in search of his teacher Won Cheon-seok. Despite King Taejong summoning him several times by granting him a government post, Won Cheon-seok continued his hermit life, and the king missed and sought his teacher.

Maehwa Village 〉

Maehwa Village 1

In early spring, when flower scents fill the air, Maeho-ri in Hojeo-myeon, Wonju-si, buzzes with the Plum Blossom Festival, where the fragrance of plum blossoms tickles the nose. The village, filled with plum blossoms creating a magnificent view, is a cherished asset proudly shared with many city dwellers. Maehwa Village is also historically significant as a village that led anti-Japanese movements long ago and touches hearts warmly with Hometown Hill Park, created from the affectionate thoughts of those remembering their hometown. Additionally, it is a place rich with stories, from its scenery and friendly people to local food, so much that a filial son's monument was even erected to honor a son devoted to his parents. Notable attractions include the Seomgang River and Sogunsan Mountain. Although Seomgang is not widely known, it boasts clear water and abundant food sources, forming a bird colony. It is also a tributary of the Han River, the water source for ten million Seoul citizens, so most surrounding farms practice eco-friendly farming methods. Sogunsan Mountain, embraced behind the village, offers well-maintained trails and is popular for harvesting diverse wild vegetables produced in spring and fall. At the village entrance, two zelkova trees over 350 years old stand proudly, like guardian spirits protecting the village.

Ganhyeon Tourist Site, located 18km west of Wonju-si, is a recreational area situated where the Seomgang and Samsancheon, tributaries of the Namhan River, converge. On both sides of the river stand towering 40-50m high unique rock formations harmonizing with dense old trees and deep blue river waters, with a wide sandy beach lining the riverbank, creating an outstanding landscape. The clean river and expansive sandy beach attract water recreation visitors in the summer. Opposite the tourist complex is Ganhyeon Rock, featuring 37 rock climbing routes. Due to the frequently changing currents and variable depths, water activities in Samsancheon require extreme caution, and camping, cooking, campfires, and fishing in the river are prohibited. The Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge at the entrance of the Sogeumsan hiking trail within the site takes about 1 hour 20 minutes round trip and boasts a massive scale: 100m high, 200m long, and 1.5m wide. The bridge floor is specially made of steel grating that gives visitors a thrilling experience, allowing them to feel the dizzying height and excitement fully.
