Sinheungsa Temple, overlooking Wando-eup at a glance, is located halfway up Nammangsan (South View Mountain) at 168 Seongnae-ri, Wando-eup, Wando-gun. It was originally founded in 1932 by Monk Kim Seong-ryeol as Bullosa Temple but later renamed Sinheungsa Temple. Sinheungsa is very close and accessible from Wando-eup without needing a car. Although it is near the city, it is a place where worldly chaos and fuss have already been shaken off. Additionally, Sinheungsa holds a ‘Jangbogo School’ for children annually and opens a pottery workshop for citizens to enjoy cultural activities. Several monks have practiced here, notably Monk Su-san Ji-jong, the current chief monk of Baekyangsa Temple. Sinheungsa enjoys an excellent location to view Wando’s landscape, including the night view. On clear days, one can see the distant scenery of Shinji and Daedunsan and watch the sun, dark red as it rises through the night. In short, Sinheungsa is a place where the city and sea harmonize.
Wando Tower, 76 meters tall, is built in Sunrise Park on about 53,000㎡ near the summit of Dongmangsan in Wando-eup. It offers fantastic views of Wando's sunrise and sunset, as well as the nightscape of Wando Port and Sinji Bridge all year round. It is a place where you can see Cheongsando, Bogildo, Nohwado, Soando, Sinjido, Gogeumdo—filming locations for Seo Pyeonje—as well as Jeju Island and Geomundo on clear days. Next to the tower is a beacon fire platform (bongsudae), and nearby is a walking trail around Dongmangsan.
The first floor of Wando Tower includes a local specialty exhibition hall, chroma key photo zone (video composite photos), rest areas, a snack bar and convenience store, and video facilities. The video facilities feature spaces introducing Wando to visitors with various videos and sounds symbolizing the area under the themes "Island of Health," "Slow City," and "Sounds of Wando." The second floor consists of an image bench, photo zone, and displays about notable people from Wando. On the observation deck, models of Wando figures Choi Kyung-ju and Admiral Jang Bogo are available for visitors to take photos with. The observation floor has video monitors showing beautiful scenes of the Dadohae Sea and binoculars for viewing. The sunrise is spectacular, revealing an expansive view of the Dadohae Archipelago and Jeju Island. At night, the tower’s landscape lighting turns on, accompanied daily by a fantastic laser show.
Wando Tower, the landmark of Wando, is located at the top of Dadohae Sunrise Park, offering views of the Dadohae around Wando, Wolchulsan Mountain in Yeongam, and even Jeju Island in the distance. It is a place where you can enjoy fantastic sunrises and sunsets. Among the various ways to reach the summit of Dadohae Sunrise Park where Wando Tower stands, there is a monorail that allows you to comfortably ascend while enjoying the scenery. The lower boarding station is adjacent to Wando Coastal Ferry Terminal, and the monorail runs every 15 minutes. Riding the monorail takes about 7 minutes one way to Wando Tower. During the ride, you can slowly take in the surrounding scenery and the beautiful panorama of Dadohae. The yellow monorail ascending and descending against the backdrop of the beautiful sea of Wando Port creates a refreshing and exotic atmosphere.
Wando Port, located at an important maritime transportation point in Jeollanam-do, allows vehicle access up to the lighthouse entrance. Fishing is possible on the breakwater. Climbing the stairs made of decks over the rocky shore connects to the hiking trail leading to Wando Tower. From ascending Wando Tower, you can see views of Wando Port and Wando city. Wando Port has a passenger ship terminal, cargo pier, maritime police pier, and a pier at the far end used for mooring small leisure boats. The port has three lighthouses, with the lighthouse located on the breakwater where leisure boats dock. Classified as a Type 1 port under the Harbor Act, about 100 leisure boats are moored here, offering a beautiful scene with distant sea views, red and white lighthouses, and abundant sights.
Wando Port Passenger Terminal, completed on January 9, 2018, has a total floor area of 4,785㎡ and can accommodate approximately 1,750 people, 5 large buses, and 200 passenger cars. The first floor is used as a space for travelers' convenience, including a coffee specialty shop, on-site office, and a direct sales center for local specialties. The second floor houses 14 maritime and fisheries-related organizations, such as Wando Customs Business Center, Korea Shipping Association, and Ship Safety Technology Corporation, carrying out comprehensive functions related to navigation and maritime logistics.
완도항에서 손에 잡힐 듯한 거리에 떠 있는 아담한 섬이다.면적은 1.75㏊(둘레 495m)에 불과한 이 섬은 동그란 형상이 마치 구슬과 같다고 해서 주도(珠島)라는 지명이 붙었으며, 일명 ‘추섬(錘島)’으로도 불린다. 하늘에서 보면 하트모양을 하고 있다. 둥글고 자그마한 이 섬은 온통 상록수에 뒤덮여 있는데, 다도해의 푸른 바다와 초록빛 섬이 아름답게 조화를 이룬다. 주도에 자생하고 있는 식물의 수는 140여 종이며, 섬 중앙에는 원시림이 그대로 남아있어 그야말로 바다에 떠 있는 수목원이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 상록수림을 구성하고 있는 식물들로는 참식나무, 돈나무, 사스레피나무, 붉가시나무, 모밀잣밤나무, 광나무, 다정큼나무, 가마귀쪽나무, 감탕나무, 빗죽이나무, 생달나무, 검양옻나무, 소사나무, 느티나무, 청가시덩굴, 인동덩굴, 덜꿩나무, 고란초 등이 있다. 이상과 같이 주도는 온대식물의 보고로서 식물생태연구상 중요한 가치를 지니고 있어 학술연구에 귀중한 자원이 되고 있다. 또한, 천연기념물인 멸종위기 야생동물 1급인 수달이 배설물이 관찰되었다. 물고기가 서식하기 알맞은 환경을 제공하여 물고기 떼를 해안으로 유인하는 어부림의 역할도 하고 있다. 상록수림 보호를 위해 일반인의 출입을 제한한다.
