Dodong Port is a fishing port on Ulleungdo located 188 km northeast of Pohang, operating routes that connect the mainland as well as Dokdo and Jukdo islands. The origin of the name Dodong comes from the term Dobangcheong, meaning 'a bustling place where many people gather.' In 1882, when the Ulleungdo Development Decree was issued with tax exemptions for settlers, more people began entering Ulleung County. At that time, Japanese people were already living there, forming a sizable town area called Dobangcheong. Later, when naming the area, the character 'Do' from Dobangcheong was used, resulting in the name Dodong. The port facilities include loading facilities such as quay walls and freight yards, and outer structures such as breakwaters and jetties. Dodong Port serves as the administrative and logistics center of the Ulleung area, with high-speed ferries operating from Pohang in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Mukho in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do, serving as the gateway to the Ulleung region.
Dodonghang Port is a ferry port of Ulleungdo Island, located 188 kilometers northeast of Pohang. The port has a 80-meter quay wall which was completed in 1977 with plans to develop the island into a tourist attraction. The port's yearly capacity is 20,000 tons of cargo, mostly consisting of imported goods for the island residents and export of squid caught around Ulleungdo Island. As ferry passengers on board approach the port, they will see Manghyangbong Peak to the left and Haengnam Lighthouse to the right.
Haengnam Dodong Coastal Walkway connects with Jeodong Coastal Walkway, and together they are called Haengnam Coastal Walkway. It is known as trail number 34 on the Haean Nuri-gil. Due to well-developed trail infrastructure such as Rainbow Bridge and LED streetlights featuring the Geopark logo, it has excellent accessibility and is a popular geological attraction for tourists. Haengnam Dodong Coastal Walkway showcases various geological structures characteristic of Ulleungdo's early volcanic activity. From Dodong Port to Dodong Lighthouse, the rock formation ages tend to become younger. The sequence from the bottom is basaltic lava flow, redeposited clastic rock formed by landslide-transported rock fragments, ignimbrite formed by hot volcanic ash accumulation, and trachyte, a type of eruptive rock. It was featured in the KBS variety show as the place where the bear doll race took place, and a related photo zone is set up near Dodong Lighthouse (Haengnam Lighthouse).
Dodong Mineral Spring Park provides a comfortable resting place for Ulleung residents and offers various tourist attractions for visitors to the island. It serves as a morning walking path for local residents and, along with Bongnae Waterfall, is one of the most visited spots by tourists. There is a legend that after a general who fought against the Japanese warriors died on the battlefield, his armor was buried near Dodong Mineral Spring. Over time, the buried armor rusted and the flowing iron water became the Dodong Mineral Spring. The park also features various tourist facilities such as the Dokdo Museum and the Dokdo Observatory Cable Car.
The spring at Dodong Mineral Spring Park contains minerals known as effective treatments for anemia, digestive disorders, and skin ailments. Legend says the armor of a general who died in war was buried here and the metal infused water is what flows in this spring. Rice cooked with this spring water turns light blue.
