Ulleungdo, the ninth largest island in South Korea, is a representative island formed by volcanic activity. It includes the main island as well as the inhabited islets Dokdo and Jukdo, and Gwaneumdo, which was previously inhabited but is now uninhabited. Surrounding the island are a total of 44 auxiliary islets, including large and small rocky islets such as Samseonam, Ddambawi, Gongam (Elephant Rock), and Bukjeo Rock. Most of Ulleungdo consists of sheer cliffs, making it a natural rock climbing destination. Climbing routes like Dodong coastal cliffs, Jeodong Yongbawi, Janggunbawi, Samseonam, and Songgotbawi are popular among mountaineers, offering breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. Additionally, Ulleungdo has nine old trail courses formed by maintaining coastal, mountain, and river paths that residents have used from the pioneering period through modern times, and these are continuously being maintained. Through these Ulleung Haedamgil trails, visitors can indirectly experience the lives of past Ulleungdo residents and fully appreciate the pristine natural scenery preserved on the island.
