왕피천 일대는 지형이 험준하여 사람의 접근이 어려워 현재까지 원시의 자연경관과 생태계를 유지해 오고 있으며, 국내 최대 규모의 생태경관 보전지역(총면적 102.84㎢)으로 지정되어 있다. 왕피천 계곡 일대에서는 돌개구멍과 토르, 절리 등과 같은 다양한 지질구조도 잘 발달하고 있다. 특히 돌개구멍(pot hole)은 빠르게 흐르는 물에 의해 빙글빙글 도는 자갈이 오랜 시간 동안 암석을 깎아 만든 침식 지형(그릇, 항아리 모양)으로 계곡의 바닥에서 흔히 볼 수 있다. 또한 수직으로 발달한 절리가 오랜 시간 풍화되어 탑 모양이나 벽돌을 세워 놓은 것과 같은 바위 지형인 토르(tor)도 흔히 볼 수 있다. 왕피천 탐방로에서는 돌개구멍인 용소와 용머리바위, 절리에 의해 생성된 학소대와 거북바위, 토르에 해당하는 송이바위 등을 관찰할 수 있다.
