Hauhyun Catholic Church has a history of over 100 years. It is managed by the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul, and the Hauhyun Catholic Church priest's residence, built in 1906, is a rare example of Hanyang Eclectic style (the body is Western-style stone, and the roof is a traditional Korean-style hipped roof with giwa tiles), giving it high architectural value. The Hauhyun area, located in the valleys of Cheonggyesan and Gwanggyosan, became a refuge for Catholics fleeing persecution in the early 19th century, forming a faith village. This area produced several martyrs during the Shinyu Persecution and the Byeongin Persecution. The parish temporarily collapsed after Father Bolliieu, who was active in this area, was martyred during the Byeongin Persecution, but a mission station was finally established in 1884. After the formation of the Korea-France Treaty in 1886, Catholicism was permitted, and in the following year (1888), Gatdeung (Wangnim Catholic Church in Hwaseong-si) was promoted to a parish and took charge of Hauhyun as well. Father Alex, the second head priest of Gatdeung, seeing Hauhyun believers performing liturgies in believers’ houses, initiated the construction of a church hall, building a ten-room thatched building. Later, Father Shaplain, the first appointed head priest, built the Hauhyun priest's residence in 1906. Hauhyun Church, once used as a retreat for priests, was rebuilt into its current form in 1965 after Father Kim Young-geun, who retired and vacationed here, noticed the church’s risk of collapse and received construction materials from the U.S. military. Hauhyun Catholic Church includes the church, priest's residence, convent, Hauhyun cafe and religious goods store, House of Healing, Madonna Hill, and Rosary Prayer Path. On October 16, 1993, the 100th-anniversary ceremony of the establishment of Hauhyun mission station was held. This site, of great significance in church history, welcomes pilgrims as a Catholic holy site. It is about 3 minutes from Bukcheongye IC and about 9 minutes by car from Indeokwon Station on Line 4, with a direct bus from the station. Nearby are Baegun Lake, Lotte Premium Outlets Time Villas, Barasan Natural Recreation Forest, as well as Cheonggyesan, Gwanaksan, Gwanggyosan, Anyang Art Park, Seoul Land, Seoul Grand Park, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, National Gwacheon Science Museum, and Let's Run Park Seoul.
