Following the Footsteps of Admiral Yi Sun-sin | Travel Course | K-Travel Mate

Hansando is an island located southeast of Tongyeong City, about 2 km by boat from Tongyeong Port. It is the main island of Hansan-myeon, featuring Bisan-do, Song-do, and Jwa-do to the east and Chubong-do to the south. It is the largest among 29 inhabited and uninhabited islands in the township. During the Imjin War, Admiral Yi Sun-sin achieved the famous Hansan Victory here, annihilating the Japanese forces. It was also the site of Hansan-jin, the first naval base of the Joseon Samdo Navy Command. The island is a sacred site imbued with national pride and patriotism, attracting many tourists who visit the Je-seungdang shrine. The highest peak is Mangsan (293.1m) to the south. The coastline is mostly rocky with rugged and steep cliffs and bizarre rock formations. Hansan Bay lies at the northwest entrance, and Hansan Strait stretches between the island and Mireukdo. It is the starting point of Hallyeohaesang National Park and famous as the site of the historic Hansan Victory, one of the world's renowned naval battles, with cultural heritage including Je-seungdang and Lee Chung-mu-gong Historic Site, built when Admiral Yi moved the Samdo Navy Command to Hansando.

'동피랑'이라는 이름은 '동쪽'과 '비랑'이라는 말이 합쳐져서 생겼다. '비랑'은 '비탈'의 통영 사투리인데 그 앞에 '동쪽'을 나타내는 말 중 '동'만 떼어 붙인 것으로 그래서 사람들은 '동피랑'이 라고 부르게 된 것이다. 푸른 통영21 추진협의회는 2007년 10월 전국적으로 동피랑길에 그림 그릴 사람들을 모았다. 그 사람들이 마을 담과 벽 길 등에 온통 그림을 그렸고 바닷가 언덕마을이 그림으로 다시 태어난 것이다. 동피랑 골목길은 그 갈래가 수십 개다. 그 모든 골목에 그림이 있고 하늘과 맞닿은 마을, 그 곳에 그려진 그림은 마을을 동화나라로 만들기에 충분하다. 또 마을에서 내려다보는 강구안 바다 풍경도 볼만 하다.

선조 39년(1606) 제 7대 통제사 이운룡(李雲龍)이 왕명으로 이충무공의 위훈을 기리고 추모하기 위하여 세운 사당이다. 경내에는 이충무공의 위패를 모신 사당을 비롯하여 내삼문, 중문, 외삼문, 정문, 홍살문등 다섯 개의 문이 있으며, 중문 안에는 향사(享祀) 때 제수를 준비하던 동재(東齋)·서재(西齋)가, 외삼문 안에는 사무를 관장하던 숭무당(崇武堂)과 인재를 양성하던 경충재(景忠齋)가, 외삼문 좌우에는 충렬묘비(忠烈廟碑) 를 비롯한 6동의 비각이, 외삼문 밖에는 1988년에 복원한 강한루(江漢樓)와 전시관 등이 있다. 지금 정침과 외삼문에 걸려 있는 「忠烈祠」현판은 현종 임금의 사액현판(賜額懸板)으로 문정공(文正公) 송준길(宋浚吉)의 글씨라 전한다.

세병관은 이경준 제6대 통제사가 통제영을 이 고장 두룡포에 옮겨온 이듬해인 선조 38년(1605) 그해 7월 14일에 준공한 통제영의 객사이다. 세병관은 정면 9칸, 측면 5칸의 단층 팔작지붕으로 된 웅장한 건물로 모든 칸에는 창호나 벽체를 만들지 않고 통칸으로 개방하였다. 우물마루로 된 평면바닥의 중앙 일부를 한단 올려놓았는데 여기에 전패를 모셨던 것으로 보인다. 장대석 기단 위에 초석을 놓고 두리기둥을 세워 기둥 윗몸은 창방으로 결구하였다. 공포는 기둥 위에만 짜올린 주심포식이지만, 익공식 수법과 다포식 수법이 많이 보인다. 기둥 사이에는 창방 위에 직접 화반을 놓아 주심도리 장여를 받치고 있다. 가구는 십일량가로서 대들보를 양쪽 내고 주위에 걸고 이 위에 동자주를 세워 중보를 걸고, 다시 동자주를 세우고 종보를 걸었다. 종보 위에는 대공을 세워 종도리를 받치고 있다. 내고주와 전면 평주 사이에는 퇴보를 걸었다. 처마는 겹처마이고 팔작기와지붕을 이루고 있으며 용마루, 합각마루, 추녀마루는 양성을 하였다.

The name Tongyeong originates from the site of the naval headquarters called Tongjeyeong. During the Imjin War, the position of Naval Commander was established to oversee the three provinces of Jeolla, Gyeongsang, and Chungcheong, and Admiral Yi Sun-sin was appointed there. He moved the naval headquarters from Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, to Hansan Island in front of Tongyeong. Since then, the area has been called Tongyeong. After the war, the naval headquarters moved to the old Chungmu city, and the name Tongyeong expanded to include that area as well. Historic sites such as Jeseungdang on Hansan Island and Sebyeonggwan in Tongyeong City remain as evidence of this. In January 1995, Tongyeong-gun merged with Chungmu-si to become Tongyeong-si. While Mireuksan Mountain is known for its best sunrise scenery, Dara Park is famous for some of the best sunsets in Korea. Located midway on the 23km coastal Sanyangilju Road around Mireukdo Island's southern coast, the name "Dara" comes from the shape of the land resembling an elephant’s molar, but now also means "a good place to watch the moon." Locals often call it "Darae." Set on the southernmost coast of Mireukdo, Dara Park is perfect for resting while enjoying the sea view. From here, you can see most of the islands under three island-myeons—Hansan, Yokji, and Saryang—dotting the sea, and the sunset views here are breathtaking. The park has a pavilion called Gwanhaejeong, flanked by camellia trees, offering panoramic views of Dara Village and the spectacular Hallyeohaesudo archipelago, making it ideal for watching sunsets and moonlit silver waves. It was built in 1997. To the east, you can see Geoje Island, and to the west, Namhae Island. From the Dara Park observatory, you can take in a stunning view of the many islets including Daesangjaedo, Soseongjaedo, Jeodo, Songdo, Hakrimdo, Gonnildo, Yeondae, Manjido, Okgokdo, Chudo, Yokji Archipelago, and countless unnamed rocky islets. A large island map is installed in the park to help visitors identify most of the islands by comparing with the real view.
