The Hakdobyeong Memorial Tower, standing tall on the grounds of Taebaek Middle School in Jangseong-dong, honors the spirits of student soldiers who bravely sacrificed their lives for the country during the Korean War (6·25). Every year on June 6, Memorial Day, a memorial service is held for these 18 spirits, instilling the noble spirit of those who gave their lives for the nation into the local students growing on the school grounds. In 1963, when Taebaek Middle School and Taebaek High School moved to Pyeonghwa-dong, Hajang-myeon, the then unit commander General Kim Jongsun was invited for the relocation unveiling ceremony and the 8th memorial service. As a symbol of Taebaek and the legacy of the young student soldiers, the memorial tower was moved and rebuilt as a dedication monument on the grounds of Taebaek Technical High School. Later, in 1973, when Taebaek Middle School separated from Taebaek Technical High School, the memorial tower was relocated and newly established at its current site on the school grounds.
