Bongsan Seowon began in the 11th year of King Yeongjo's reign in the Joseon Dynasty (1735) when descendants built a shrine dedicated to Seonsaeng Son Lin (孫遴). By the 3rd year of King Sunjo's reign (1803), it was called Bongsan Seowon. However, in 1864, the seowon was abolished under the Seowon Abolition Order. In 1967, a lecture hall was rebuilt and named Gyeongmojae (敬慕齋). In 1996, thanks to the efforts of descendants, the lecture hall Jihangdang (砥行堂) was constructed, along with Bongsamsa Shrine (鳳岩祠) on the site of the east study, and Songdokjae (誦讀齋) as the west study. A memorial stele honoring Seonsaeng Son Lin was also erected. In 2009, Jihangdang was extensively renovated due to deterioration. The layout and size of the buildings show that upon entering the outer gate called Jihangmun, a gatehouse with a traditional peaked roof, the stele of Mun Tan Son Seonsaeng stands on the right and the lecture hall is opposite it. The lecture hall bears two signs: Bongsan Seowon and Jihangdang. (Source: Haengbok Suseong Culture and Tourism)
This Seowon was reestablished in 1993 as a Seowon from Cheommogjae (瞻慕齋), which was built to honor Nam Eun (南隱) Seo Seop (徐涉), an early Joseon Dynasty civil official known for his upright integrity. Seo Seop was the patriarch of the Dalseong Seo clan's Panseo branch, passed the grand civil service exam during King Sejong's reign, and served as Minister of Personnel under King Danjong. After King Sejo's usurpation, he resigned from office, returned home, changed his pen name from Namae (南涯) to Nam Eun (南隱), and lived in seclusion until his death. His descendants knew little about him until over 80 years ago when his old house was torn down and his writings and biography were found in a box hidden in the ceiling, revealing his loyalty and integrity widely. In 1926, descendants built Cheommogjae near his tomb in Hwanggeum-dong, and in 1954 it was rebuilt with a stele erected. The Seowon's main hall has four rooms and is called Chungjeongdang (忠正堂). The east dormitory, Guinjae (求仁齋), and the west dormitory, Jonseongjae (存誠齋), each have three rooms. The shrine, Gyeonguisa (景義祠), is located behind the main hall. On the west wall above the main hall hangs Yi Surak's Doksan Seowon-gi (德山書院記) plaque, with couplets on the pillars. The outer gate is Sungjeolmun (崇節門), and the inner gate is Yuhyeonmun (維賢門). To the east of the main hall is the stele and pavilion of Nam Eun Seo Seonsaeng Shindobi (南隱 徐先生神道碑), and to the south of the hall is the Doksan Seowon historic site stele.
