Known as the "Mountain with Beautiful Autumn Foliage," Chuwolsan is named for its peaks that seem to touch the full moon in autumn. It resembles Wolaksan in Chungbuk, featuring spectacular rocky cliffs and Boriam, a temple precariously perched on a cliff edge that evokes awe. The founder and exact date of Boriam's establishment are unclear, but legend says that one of three wooden birds carved by Bojoguksa Jinul at Jirisan's Cheonwang Peak flew and settled at Boriam on Chuwolsan. Additionally, during the Japanese invasions, General Kim Deok-ryeong's wife, Heungyang Lee, is said to have leapt from the cliff below Boriam to her death while fleeing Japanese soldiers. As the name suggests, the mountain is abundant with maple trees, turning the entire mountain red in autumn. From the trails, the blue waves of Damyang Lake below provide a refreshing view. Hiking trails start from Wolgyeri, Miljae, and Ssangtaeri, with any route taking about three hours. The most popular course is from Wolgyeri, passing Boriam to the summit, then returning via the cave shelter back to Wolgyeri.
The starting point is Damyang. Buses run 12 times daily from 6:30 AM to 7:20 PM between Damyang and Gamagol Yongyeon along the Damyang lakeside below Chuwolsan, with service extending to Yongmyeon Gamagol until 8:00 PM. Access by road includes the 88 Olympic Expressway Damyang IC, Route 29 toward Jeongeup, Yongmyeon Samgeori, and Wolgyeri Chuwolsan entrance parking lot.
