A mountain fortress from the Goryeo Dynasty located in Seorak-dong, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, with a trail around 3,500m, also called Seoraksan Fortress. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular views of Outer Seorak and the endless East Sea. Currently, the fortress walls have mostly collapsed, leaving only the site. This fortress is a natural rock fortress area that surrounds the summit of Hwachaeneungseon Ridge extending north from Daecheongbong, Seoraksan’s main peak, and the northern mountain end. The exact construction date is unknown, but a legend says it was built by merchants named Kwon and Kim during the Silla period to evade a rebellion, hence the name Gwongeumseong. The Naksansa records also explain that during the Mongol invasions in late Goryeo, nearby residents built and fled to this fortress, indicating it existed before late Goryeo. Most of the fortress uses natural rock walls, with some parts built of stacked stone, located at a high place with little water flowing through small valleys on the sides, making it difficult to climb. It gradually declined after the Joseon period, leaving only traces today.
Sinheungsa was founded by the monk Jajang during Queen Jindeok of Silla's reign and was initially called Hyangseongsa. Originally built on the site of what is now the Kensington Hotel, it was destroyed several times by fire and rebuilt at its current location during King Injo of Joseon. At the time of reconstruction, three monks—Yeongseo, Hyewon, and Yeonok—had the same dream of an old white-haired man indicating the temple site, leading them to establish the temple slightly below the original site and name it Sinheungsa. Originally, Sinheungsa (神興寺) meant that the temple prospered by divine guidance, but in 1995, the first character was changed to 新 to signify the hope of reviving Buddhism in the Yeongdong region. Sinheungsa also operates templestays where visitors can experience and learn about Buddhist traditions and culture.

At the entrance of Seoraksan, the place formerly called Naemulchi (內勿淄) has been newly renovated and renamed Seorak Sunrise Park. Located along National Route 7, it is a key transportation hub where the roads to Daepohang, Yangyang, and Seoraksan diverge, making it an easy spot for sunrise trips. The Sunrise Park includes various themed sculptures such as Sunrise Plaza, Lovers' Path, Happiness Path, and Love Path, along with the Seoraksan Gateway symbolic sculpture and illuminated fountain, offering diverse facilities for enjoyable walks. The origin of Naemulchi dates back to the Joseon Dynasty when the scholar Song Si-yeol, exiled from Hamgyeong-do Deokwon to Geoje-do, passed by this area along the East Coast and stayed overnight as night fell. Due to heavy rain causing a flood, he stayed several more days and named it 'Mulchi,' meaning 'water submerged village.' Unlike most East Coast shores which are either cliffs or sandy beaches, the coastline here consists of pebbles and stones.
