Meeting hidden scenery of Seoraksan National Park in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sokcho City · schedule Other · distance 15km · 3 stops · hi…

Seoraksan is a famous mountain representing Sokcho. While it is good to hike up to Daecheongbong Peak, just visiting Gwongeumseong via cable car from the entrance of Seoraksan, passing by Sinheungsa Temple, and exploring the newly established Ulsanbawi Rock trail is enough to enjoy the scenic beauty of Seoraksan all day long. From the seaside Sunrise Park on the way to Seoraksan, the mountain comes fully into view.

At the entrance of Seoraksan, the place formerly called Naemulchi (內勿淄) has been newly renovated and renamed Seorak Sunrise Park. Located along National Route 7, it is a key transportation hub where the roads to Daepohang, Yangyang, and Seoraksan diverge, making it an easy spot for sunrise trips. The Sunrise Park includes various themed sculptures such as Sunrise Plaza, Lovers' Path, Happiness Path, and Love Path, along with the Seoraksan Gateway symbolic sculpture and illuminated fountain, offering diverse facilities for enjoyable walks. The origin of Naemulchi dates back to the Joseon Dynasty when the scholar Song Si-yeol, exiled from Hamgyeong-do Deokwon to Geoje-do, passed by this area along the East Coast and stayed overnight as night fell. Due to heavy rain causing a flood, he stayed several more days and named it 'Mulchi,' meaning 'water submerged village.' Unlike most East Coast shores which are either cliffs or sandy beaches, the coastline here consists of pebbles and stones.
Ulsan Rock is Seoraksan's foremost famous rock formation. Jagged cliffs rise to 900 meters above sea level along the mountainside like a folding screen. Ulsan Rock consists of six peaks, and the grand view of this giant rocky mountain evokes awe. With a circumference of 4 km, its majestic appearance is striking, and from the summit, a panoramic view of Daechongbong and Outer Seorak unfolds. Ulsan Rock itself is an outstanding scenic spot, and the view from afar is equally impressive. Historical records from many Joseon Dynasty poets and scholars, including Choi Yeon and Heo Jeok, attest to this. Ulsan Rock is also famous for various legends about its name. One story says a sky god gathered all the peaks of the mountains to create the finest scenery at Geumgangsan, but Ulsan Rock, being large and heavy, was late. Ashamed, it never returned to its hometown of Ulsan, instead resting in Seoraksan. Other theories say the name comes from its fence-like shape or its nickname "Crying Mountain." Ulsan Rock can be climbed starting from Sogongwon, passing Shinheungsa Temple and Heundeul Rock. The initial slope is gentle, but after Heundeul Rock, the path continues with steep rocky hills and iron stairways. The round trip takes about 4 hours, and the difficulty level makes it hard for children or elderly to climb.
