Jido is a connected island belonging to Jido-eup, Shinan-gun. The shape of the island’s terrain resembles the character 'Ji (智),' which is why it is called Jido. From the Samhan period to the Goryeo period, it was called Dogang-gun or Mugang-gun. In the 8th year of King Sukjong’s reign (1682), a naval base was established but was abolished in the 32nd year of King Gojong’s reign (1895), and Jido-gun was established. In 1914, Jido-gun was abolished and incorporated into Muan-gun. In 1969, it separated from Muan-gun and became part of Shinan-gun, and in December 1980, it was promoted to Jido-eup. It is connected by Cheolbu ferry lines to Imja and Jeungdo, making transportation smooth, and it is also an educational center. Historical cultural assets include Jido Hyanggyo, established in 1898 according to the principle of building one Hyanggyo per county following the administrative reorganization in 1896 during King Gojong’s reign. Near Seonchang in Eupnae-ri, there is a notable stone monument street with as many as 27 standing steles. Jido Traditional Market, which operates every five days, is a traditional market selling fish at affordable prices. Jido-eup and Imja-do produce the nation’s best shrimp jeot (salted fermented shrimp). The Shinan Salted Seafood Town sells shrimp jeot, squid jeot, hairtail fish jeot, and more. Directly in front of the Salted Seafood Town spreads the expansive Shinan mudflats, one of the world’s five major mudflats, and next to it is a marine deck path leading to Turtle Island.

Jido-eup in Sinan-gun, located at the southernmost point of the Muan Peninsula, is 66 km away from Mokpo. To the east is Muan-gun Haeje-myeon, to the west Imja-myeon, to the south Jaeun-myeon and Aphae-eup, and to the north across the sea is Yeonggwang-gun Nakwol-myeon. Ilsimsa is located here, where a Hyanggyo is installed. Ilsimsa is situated on a hill behind the eup office, considered the center of Jido-eup. The exact history of Ilsimsa is unknown. It existed as a shrine enshrining the portrait of Guan Yu about 300 years ago and was reconstructed in 1919 with the current main hall and dormitory buildings. It was rebuilt again in August 1951. Originally named Wiryeongsa at founding, it was renamed Ilsimsa in 1953. With no records, the precise founding date and scale cannot be confirmed. There is a Geungnakjeon hall enshrining about 540 memorial plaques of soldiers and police officers who died in the Korean War, serving as a patriotic sanctuary comforting the souls of those who died heroically for the nation and people.

Hyanggyo are educational institutions established by the government to hold rituals for Confucius and various sages, and to educate and enlighten local people. Jido Hyanggyo was built in the first year of Gyeongyang (1896) when Jido-gun was newly established following the administrative reorganization of the late Joseon period, based on the principle of one hyanggyo per county. Later, the Myeongnyundang was rebuilt in 1947–1948, the Daeseongjeon was repaired in 1966, and the Myeongnyundang was repaired again in 1968, forming the current scale. It is located on a gentle slope of Bongjeongsan in two terraces, with the educational space in front and the ritual space behind in a front-school, rear-shrine (Jeonhak Humyo) arrangement. The Daeseongjeon measures five kan wide by three kan deep, housing memorial tablets of Confucius and sages from China and Korea inside. The Myeongnyundang, a lecture hall where students gather, is four kan wide by two and a half kan deep, with a paljak-style roof that looks like the character "八" from the side. Other buildings include Yangsajae, Naesammun, and Oemun. During the Joseon Dynasty, the state supported the land, slaves, and books to educate students, but today, only the ritual function remains with no educational role.
