Located 28.5 km west of Mokpo (longitude 126°16′E, latitude 34°39′N), Amtaedo island faces Yudalsan mountain in Mokpo to the east, Palgeum-myeon to the south, and Ja-eun-myeon to the north. It takes about 1 hour 20 minutes by boat from Mokpo Port and about 25 minutes by ferry from Songgong Port on Aphado. Named for its many scattered stones and rock walls surrounding it like a folding screen, the island is crowned by Seungbongsan Mountain (355m above sea level), rising proudly in the center, welcoming visitors. With a long history dating back to the prehistoric era, Amtaedo covers a total area of 40.08 km², of which 13.25 km² is fertile farmland producing abundant rice, barley, and garlic. The island also generates income through marine aquaculture. The opening of Eunam Bridge connecting Amtaedo and Ja-eun Island has made it a popular island travel route filled with historical and interesting sights, attracting many tourists. Amtaedo rice is well known for its high quality, characteristic of reclaimed land. With this fertile land, Amtaedo also bears the historical weight soaked with the blood, sweat, tears, and lamentations of its ancestors. The 1924 "Amtaedo Tenant Dispute" was the first tenant dispute in Korea. It involved high rent reduction movements by Amtaedo tenants from August 1923 to August 1924, during which many farmers were arrested and sacrificed. To commemorate this, in 1998 a 6.74m high, 1,360㎡ area "Amtaedo Tenant Resistance Monument" was erected to honor the noble tenant struggle. At Biseokgeori about 2 km east of Janggo-ri lies the Songgok-ri Maehyangbi [埋香碑], built in 1405. It is a relic of Maitreya belief found only in a few coastal sites nationwide. The Maehyangbi, measuring 157 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 30 cm thick, is inscribed on a flat natural stone surface with seven lines of text. It records a ritual of burying incense wood in the sea to establish a connection with the future reincarnated Maitreya Buddha. Songgok-ri Maehyangbi is notable for being the only such relic found on an island across North and South Korea. Noman-sa Temple, located at the foot of Seungbongsan in Sugok-ri, is the oldest temple in Sinan-gun, established in 1873 as a branch temple of Haenam Daheungsa. This small temple, uniquely built in a maritime mountain area, consists of one Daeungjeon hall, one Chilseonggak hall, and one temple lodging building. Behind the main hall is a womb-shaped spring said never to dry even during ten-year droughts. The sea view below offers stunning scenery, making it a must-visit on an Amtae tour. Additionally, Amtaedo has cultural heritage sites such as Igeumwusil in Sinseok-ri and Songgokwusil in Songgok-ri. There is also a bicycle path; the Cheonsa Bicycle Path Course 4 connects Amtaedo and Ja-eun Island, with a length of 98 km.

When entering the three-way intersection, the murals filling the walls catch your eye. The murals depict a smiling couple whose heads are camellia trees. Therefore, the Gidong Samgeori Mural is also called the 'Camellia Tree Perm Hairstyle Mural.' The camellia trees growing inside the fence blend with the murals to create a unique atmosphere.
