Gitdaebong is the highest peak of Hongdo Island, named for its flagpole-like rocky summit. The entire island is designated as a natural protected area since 1965 due to its ecological value, with native plants such as evergreen vines, shi tree, and camellia forest. It was also designated as part of Dadohaehaesang National Park in 1981. Gitdaebong harmonizes with coastal landscapes like Doknipmun and Seokhwagul, contributing to Hongdo's scenic beauty.
The starting point is Mokpo. There are two daily trips from Mokpo to Hongdo and two daily trips from Hongdo to Mokpo. There are no roads for cars on the island, so there is no car ferry service; vehicles must be left in Mokpo.
