Gageodo (Soheuksando) is the westernmost island of South Korea, close enough to China that the crowing of roosters can be heard from the Chinese mainland at dawn. The island features the tall peak of Doksilsan (639m) and dramatic cliffs, creating a magnificent scenic view. The island's climbing trails are on a peninsula-shaped landform on the west, with columnar joints along the coastline, also called island folding screen rocks. The island is famous for its impressive rocky peaks and sea cliffs stretching like a folding screen, with especially beautiful sunset views. The name "Gageodo" may mean "a truly livable island" or refer to the endless boat routes surrounding it. Gageodo is an important base for West Sea fishing and a rich fishing ground contested by Korean, Chinese, and Japanese fishing vessels. Located at the southwestern tip of the national territory, the island holds geographic, diplomatic, and political significance. It attracts many anglers year-round due to abundant fish species such as anchovy, croaker, cutlassfish, tuna, and sea bream. In front of the Gageodo lighthouse lies Gukhuldo (Guguldo), a natural monument and breeding ground for seabirds. Over a hundred migratory bird species, including summer birds like the common guillemot and horned grebe, rest or breed on the island during spring and autumn.
