Introduction

[A fortress of rocks meeting the three great conditions of a famous mountain] Bukhansan is a fortress. Its rugged terrain is formed by prominent rocky peaks including the highest peak Baegundae, Insubong, Nojeokbong, Uisangbong, and Bohyeonbong, around which people actually built a fortress. Although not very high, it stands out as there are no comparable mountains nearby, visible from anywhere within sight—from Gaeseong in the north to Anseong in the south. To the west of the Baegunsan~Unaksan~Yongmunsan~Chiaksan line, there is no other mountain to overshadow it. The summit peak Bongmami, rising like three horns, is impressively unmatched. Valleys such as Uidong Valley, Bukhansanseong Valley, and Pyeongchangdong Valley feature waterfalls and rocky streams. From the summit, the Han River, flowing like a narrow belt of water, sparkles in the sunlight. This perfectly fulfills the three great conditions of a famous mountain. From the majestic main ridge stretching from Baegundae to Bohyeonbong, ridges such as Wonhyobong, Sangjangbong, Jindallae, Kalbawi, Hyeongjebong, Hyangrobong, and Uisangbong extend like threads of a spindle, creating numerous valleys that embrace millions of Seoul residents who visit anytime. Climbers train here, shouting "Let's burn our youth with ropes, hammers, pitons, and carabiners," as they scale Insubong, Nojeokbong, and Suribong, shaped like blocks of tofu. Bukhansan was destined from birth to be the guardian mountain of the capital.
