Introduction

[Hallasan is Jeju Island itself] Hallasan, the highest peak in the southern Korean Peninsula at 1,915 meters above sea level, embodies the breath and history of the people of Jeju Island. The name Hallasan originally means 'a mountain that can pull the Milky Way (雲漢可拏引也),' emphasizing its great height. It is also known by several beautiful names such as Buak (釜岳), Dumuak (頭無岳), Yeongjusan (瀛州山), and Jinsan (眞山). Since people began living on this island, Hallasan has been synonymous with Jeju Island for its inhabitants. The people of Jeju share their history, nature, climate, and even legends with Hallasan. The conical Hallasan is divided into five hiking trails at its peak: Yeongsil, Eorimok, Donnaeko (currently closed), Gwaneumsa, and Seongpanak courses. These trails are not only paths leading up the mountain but also strong links connecting the sacred Baengnokdam crater with the people of Jeju. Throughout Hallasan, numerous small conical volcanoes called 'oreum' formed by volcanic activity number around 360. They rise as if guarding Baengnokdam or embracing it.
