World’s Five Climate Zones by Train in Chungcheongnam-do Seocheon-gun · schedule Other · distance 77.2km · 4 stops · highlights National Institute of Ec…

Seocheon National Ecological Institute is an experiential travel space exploring the living and breathing Earth's ecosystem. It is a place preserving diverse ecosystems from various global climatic zones besides Korea's forests and wetlands, serving as a field for ecological learning. It is broadly divided into the indoor exhibition and experience space called Ecoryum, wetlands, and outdoor experience areas. Viewing the sunrise and walking through the camellia tree forest at the nearby Maryangpo Port will be healing on its own. If the schedule aligns, visiting the Hansan Five-Day Market held on the 1st and 6th of every month offers enjoyable experiences.

The National Institute of Ecology Ecoriaum exhibits about 1,600 representative flora and fauna from the world's five major climates: tropical, desert, Mediterranean, temperate, and polar, allowing a vivid experience of a living ecosystem. There are also two permanent theme exhibition halls for learning the basic concepts of ecosystems, a special exhibition hall for ecosystem-themed exhibitions, an Eco Lab with ecology education tailored by viewing height, a children's ecology reading room, and a 4D theater. The outdoor exhibition areas include the Geumguri Zone to observe wetland ecosystem features, Hadaram Zone reproducing Korea's forest vegetation by climate zone, Godaeryuk Zone recreating habitats of Korea's representative deer species, Najeojeo Zone for enjoying various wild egrets and ducks, the Eco Care Center for isolation to prevent highly pathogenic avian influenza and protection of internationally endangered species, and a CITES animal protection facility for safeguarding internationally endangered animals from smuggling and illegal trade.
Maryang Port in Seomyeon, Seocheon-gun, is located at a tip that juts out toward the sea, allowing visitors to see both the sunset and the sunrise due to its geographic position. Thus, Maryang-ri, where Maryang Port is located, is also called 'Maryangpo Sunrise Village.' Every year at the end of the year and New Year's, many tourists gather from all over the country to watch the sunset and sunrise. The breakwater at Maryang Port is a good fishing spot, and in the early morning at the Maryang Port fish market, you can see fishermen auctioning fresh seafood they just caught. Additionally, many festivals are held at Maryang Port: the Maryangpo Sunrise Festival in January, the Dongbaek Flower and Jjukkumi Festival in March, the Wild Flatfish and Sea Bream Festival in May, the Hansan Mosi Cultural Festival in June, the Chunjangdae Beach Summer Cultural Arts Festival in July, and the Hongwon Port Gizzard Shad and Flower Crab Festival in August, all offering plentiful sights and foods. Behind Maryang Port, there is a camellia forest with about 70 camellia trees boasting an age of over 500 years. In summer evenings, small concerts are often held at Maryang Port Plaza with LED-lit sculptures, creating a romantic atmosphere.
Hansan 5-Day Market is held every month on the 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th, 21st, and 26th between Hansan Terminal and Hansan Elementary School. Additionally, there are alley shops that are always open even on days when the market is not held. Although registered as a regular market in 1956, it is said to have been established before the Joseon Dynasty. On the vegetable street at the market entrance, various vegetables and grains such as spinach, radish, carrot, shepherd's purse, and mugwort are abundant. The seafood section offers Seocheon's specialty, Bakdae fish, and the general goods section sells everything from black and yellow rubber bands to clothespins, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, nail clippers, and Italian towels. The market’s famous specialty is Hansan mosijado, a ramie fabric worn since the Three Kingdoms period, likened to 'dragonfly wings' for its light and cool summer wear. Hansan ramie is known for its fine threads and bright shine, regarded as the best in Joseon’s eight provinces. Most of Korea’s ramie is traded here in Hansan, and the ramie market briefly opens between 4 and 5 a.m. before disappearing, known as a 'flash market.' This market is also called 'Anjang' or 'Hansanjang.' Despite this, it is crowded beyond measure with merchants from the local area and across the country.
