Located in Sancheong-eup, Seogye Seowon was established in 1606 (the 39th year of King Seonjo) by Confucian scholars including Jeong Gu of Hangang to commemorate the scholarship and achievements of Deokgye O Geon (1521–1574), a mid-Joseon scholar-official. In 1677 (the 3rd year of King Sukjong), it was named Seogye Seowon, enshrining the revered scholar and serving local education, becoming the only government-recognized seowon in Saneumhyun (the old name of Sancheong-gun). It was restored in 1921. The site consists of Changdeoksa (3 kan), the main lecture hall (4 kan), an auxiliary lecture hall (3 kan), east and west dormitories (2 kan each), the main gate, Gosa (3 kan), and Tae-sil (4 kan). In the sacred Changdeoksa, O Geon is enshrined as the main deity; memorial tablets for Ogan and Bak Mun-yeong are placed on the left, and for Ojang on the right. Every year on the 2nd day of the 4th lunar month, Confucian scholars perform memorial rites. The building layout is a typical seowon arrangement: passing through the gatehouse Ipdeokru, there are dormitories on the left and right, with Seogye Seowon lecture hall behind. Behind the lecture hall are Changdeoksa, Deokcheonjae, Jangpanggak, and the monument pavilion arranged along an axis.
