산청에 위치한 성철대종사생가는 산은 산이요 물은 물이로다 라는 법어집과 불경국역집을 남긴 성철 스님의 생가를 복원한 곳이다. 승려는 수행만이 중생을 위하는 길이라며 일절 모습을 드러내지 않고 암자에 칩거, 정진수도에만 전념했던 현시대의 선승이다. 성철스님의 생가복원 및 불교 성역화 사업으로 생가 안채와 사랑채, 외삼문 등이 세워졌으며, 성철스님의 체취를 느낄 수 있는 겁외사는 불교성지로서, 전국의 불교신자와 관광객들에게 불교의 의미를 되새겨보는 장소가 되고 있다.
