Baekdeoksan⛰️ 1350 m

Introduction

[A mountain with outstanding snowy scenery and primeval natural forest] Baekdeoksan is a mountain with an elevation of 1,348.9 meters, located on the border of Bangnim-myeon and Pyeongchang-eup in Pyeongchang-gun, Jucheon-myeon and Suju-myeon in Yeongwol-gun, and Anheung-myeon in Hoengseong-gun. It is famous as a winter hiking destination due to its excellent snowy scenery and the main valley that preserves a primeval natural forest. Furthermore, below Yeonhwabong on the southwest side of Baekdeoksan is Beopheungsa, a thousand-year-old temple from the Silla period and one of the five great Jeokmyeolbogung (sacred places where Buddha's relics are enshrined), along with Bongjeongam of Seoraksan, Sangwonsa of Odaesan, Tongdosa of Yeongchwisan, and Jeongamsa of Taebaeksan, making it even more renowned. The mountain pass called Sajasan (1,181m), which leads to Baekdeoksan, was originally named Sajesan (Four Treasures Mountain). This name comes from a legend that the mountain has four treasures—lacquer, honey, mulberry, and a type of soil eaten during famine—so people would not starve there. However, it is now called Sajasan because the monk Jajang Yulsa, who founded Beopheungsa, is said to have arrived riding a lion while bringing Buddha's relics to the current Jeokmyeolbogung.
