Yeongildae Observatory is South Korea's first maritime pavilion located at Yeongil Beach, also known as 'Yeongiljeong.' It is a two-story building with traditional Korean architecture, recognized for its beautiful space, winning the 2013 Spatial Culture Award. The pavilion, covered with 8,653 roof tiles containing citizens' wishes, can be reached by walking an 80m pier extending toward the sea. Thick, long pillars support Yeongildae from beneath the sea, making the pavilion appear as if floating on the water. From this observatory, visitors can overlook the sea off Pohang, Yeongil Bay, and Pohang Steelworks. Watching the sunrise over the sea in the early morning at Yeongildae, meaning "to greet the sun," is delightful, and the night view illuminated by landscape lighting is also a must-see. Nearby are Yeongildae Beach with its 1.8 km long white sandy beach, a source of pride for Pohang citizens, the Space Walk, a new landmark of Pohang, and Hwanho Park, home to the Pohang City Museum of Art.
