Guryongpo Japanese Residential Street is where Japanese people came to live after the 1883 Korea-Japan Commercial Treaty. Japan built Guryongpo Port and managed the East Sea region, leading many Japanese fishermen to settle here and exploit the fishing rights of Koreans, marking a painful historical site. Currently, 47 Japanese-style wooden buildings remain in the village. In 2010, Pohang City established the 'Guryongpo Japanese Residential Street' as a field for historical education. Furusattoya, once a restaurant, is preserved inside exactly as it was and now operates as a teahouse offering various Japanese teas and yukata experiences. There is also Simsang Elementary School, where Japanese children studied, and a model mailbox made in the 1900s. The Guryongpo Modern Museum, converted from the house of Hashimoto Genkichi who immigrated during the Japanese colonial era, showcases Japanese-style buildings and lifestyle of the time. Nearby attractions include Gwamegi Culture Center and Guryongpo Columnar Joints. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of the Korean Wave - This street served as the background for the drama , depicting the small, close-knit village Ongsan. Entering the street with Japanese wooden buildings feels like stepping back over 100 years. The fishing village view from the park stairs is so beautiful it won the top prize in the Korea Scenic Award, and the Guryongpo Modern History Hall reveals the lifestyle of Japanese residents at that time.

Guryongpo Port, located on the road descending from Homigot in Pohang toward Gampo, was developed into a port in 1923 during the Japanese occupation by building a pier and constructing breakwaters. It currently has facilities including a northern breakwater about 600m, a southern breakwater about 400m, and a quay about 600m long, with a cargo handling capacity of 334,000 tons. Nearby is the Guryongpo Modern Cultural History Street where you can see traditional Japanese houses, and the Guryongpo Market is close by, allowing visitors to enjoy the warm atmosphere and delicious food of the local market. The area is known for many shops selling gwamegi, a local specialty, and as the nation's largest snow crab production area, offering high-quality gwamegi and fresh snow crabs.
