Gyeonggi-do Pocheon City · Today’s itinerary

Art blooms even in ruins

An art space created from an abandoned mine. Pocheon Art Valley offers a unique emotional experience each season. The pure white winter, fresh green spring, lush summer, and colorful autumn foliage provide a striking contrast with the rocky cliffs and blue waters. The area near the DMZ mostly has poor conditions for art and culture. This travel course introduces Pocheon Art Valley as a cultural and artistic resource in the Pocheon area near the DMZ, including nearby attractions such as Pyeonggang Botanical Garden and Meonguri Observatory (Hantangang Geopark).

Pocheon Art Valley is a complex cultural and artistic space where you can enjoy art within nature, featuring a picturesque emerald lake and towering granite cliffs resembling folding screens. Until the 1990s, it was an abandoned quarry that no one visited and left as an eyesore. However, it has since been completely transformed into a healing destination combining nature and art, attracting 400,000 visitors annually. Since 2014, an astronomy science center has also opened, allowing visitors to stargaze, making it popular as an educational spot for children and a dating course for couples.

Meonguri Gorge is a basalt gorge so spectacular that it is called the 'Grand Canyon of Korea.' Traditionally, it was called Meonguri, meaning 'Do not drink and go. You will get bruises if you fall.' Meonguri Gorge best shows the formation process of lava that flowed through the Hantan River. A distinctive feature is that the gorge's two sides have different characteristics. Due to the terrain, the river meanders, causing one side to be heavily eroded by the stream, where Quaternary basalt is almost worn away or remaining in parts, creating a gentle slope. The opposite side retains basalt columnar jointing cliffs intact. These basalt columns can be observed throughout the Hantan River area. Columnar joints form as lava cools and are generally divided into three parts: upper colonnade, entablature, and lower colonnade, differing in shape and size depending on the cooling rate at each level. The entablature in the center is characterized by a mixed pattern of joints appearing as a radial shape. The formed cliffs extend about 4 km, with cliff heights of approximately 30 to 40 meters. Currently, various trekking courses such as the Hantan River Dullegil trail are established around Meonguri Gorge, allowing visitors to enjoy the fresh air of the Hantan River while admiring the magnificent scenery of Meonguri Gorge.
