Remembering scholars along the Han River
Gyeonggi-do Namyangju City · Today’s itinerary

Remembering scholars along the Han River

Sujongsa Temple is a place where you can overlook the confluence of the Namhangang and Bukhangang rivers, and in terms of the spectacular view unfolding below your feet, it is not inferior to any other temple. The morning mist rising from Cheongpyeongho often thickly covers Ungilsan Mountain. Walking through the tranquil and quiet site of Dasan's remains is a perfect way to fully enjoy autumn.

Suchongsa Temple is a branch temple of Bongseonsa near the summit of Ungilsan in Songchon-ri, Joan-myeon, Namyangju. This temple is renowned as a prime location praised by Seogeojeong as having the best view among Eastern temples, offering scenery of Yangsu-ri where the Bukhan River and Namhan River meet, with views extending to nearby mountains. It is said to have been first built during the Silla period, though detailed history is unknown, and there is a legend related to King Sejo of Joseon. While spending a night in Yangsu-ri on a trip for illness treatment, King Sejo followed the faint sound of a bell to a cave containing 18 Arhats statues, where dripping water from a rock crevice produced the bell sound. He then enshrined the 18 Arhats and established the temple, naming it Suchongsa. However, the temple already had significant size before this, as evidenced by the burial mound of Jung-ui Ongju, King Sejo's aunt. Existing buildings include the Daeungbojeon, Eungjinjeon, Yaksa-jeon, Sansingak, Bell Pavilion, Gyeonghakwon, and lodgings. Important cultural assets include treasure-designated artifacts within the Suchongsa burial mound and the five-story stone pagoda of Suchongsa. Within the temple grounds stands a 500-year-old large ginkgo tree bestowed by King Sejo. While all four seasons offer splendid views, the autumn foliage period is especially famous for stunning scenery. From the Suchongsa parking lot, it is a 400m walk to the temple, taking about 15 minutes.

The Jeong Yak-yong Historic Site is located in Neungnae-ri, Joan-myeon, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, and is the birthplace, childhood, and hometown where Dasan Jeong Yak-yong spent his later years. This is a historic area rooted from Jeong Yak-yong's fifth ancestor and reflects his life and scholarship. Dasan Jeong Yak-yong inherited Silhak scholarship from Yuhyeongwon and Yi Ik, embraced the ideas of the Northern Learning School, emphasizing practical knowledge and improving people's livelihood, and compiled Silhak into a comprehensive form. Throughout his life, he wrote over 500 books and more than 2,700 poems and passed away in his hometown in 1836, during the second year of King Heonjong's reign, at the age of 75. The historic site includes Jeong Yak-yong's tomb (a Gyeonggi-do monument), his birthplace Yeoyudang, the shrine Mundo-sa, a memorial hall, a cultural hall, and a cultural street. The memorial hall exhibits copies of works such as Mokminsimseo, Gyeongseuyupyo, and Heumheumsinseo, as well as a diorama reproducing the Suwon Hwaseong construction site. The cultural hall displays seven artworks themed on Jeong Yak-yong, including 'Sina Jigu Bang' and 'Jeong Yak-yong Garden.' Mundo-sa is a shrine named after Jeong Yak-yong's posthumous title, where descendants hold memorial rites annually on his death anniversary. Nearby the site are Paldang Lake, wildflower fields, an ecological pond, and Dasan Ecological Park. Sujongsa Temple has Samjeongheon, where Jeong Yak-yong drank tea with acquaintances. Since 1986, the annual Dasan Cultural Festival has become a historical cultural event where various citizen events and performances allow people to experience Jeong Yak-yong's life and ideas.

Yangpyeong Dumulmeori 3

Dumulmeori is the place where the Bukhan River, flowing from Geumgangsan, and the Namhan River, originating from Geomryongso at the foothills of Geumdaebong in Gangwon-do, meet, marking the beginning of the Han River. Early morning mist, sunrise, yellow sailboats, and a zelkova tree over 400 years old blend harmoniously in Yangsu-ri Dumulmeori. It is a place that transforms beautifully through the four seasons and is selected as one of the must-visit spots in Korea by Korean Tourism 100. Known as Han River's No. 1 Scenic Spot (Dumulgyeong) and a filming location for various dramas and movies, it attracts numerous domestic and international tourists, serving as a representative ecotourism site in South Korea. The beautiful scenery of Dumulmeori has been famous since the Joseon Dynasty, preserved through Lee Geonpil's 'Two Rivers' Seungyudo' and Jeong Seon's 'Dokbaektan,' transcending time. It is an ecological treasure that should be passed on to future generations as a beautiful heritage of both South Korea and Yangpyeong.
