고하도 이충무공유적지는 충무공 이순신 장군이 정유재란 때인 조선 선조 30년(1597) 10월에서 다음해 3월까지 머물면서 군량미 및 군수물자를 모아 전쟁에 대비하던 곳이다. 장군은 이곳에 돌로 남·서 길이 1㎞, 높이 2m, 폭 1m의 성을 쌓아 적의 배를 구별하고, 군자금을 모으기 위해 오가는 배들에게 1∼3석의 식량을 내어 놓고 통행첩을 받아가도록 하여 열흘 만에 일만 석의 군량미를 비축하였다. 또한 이곳에서 무기와 배를 만들며 전열을 가다듬었다고 한다.

구 동양척식주식회사 목포지점(근대역사관)은 1920년 6월에 건립되었다. 근세 서양 건축양식으로 지어진 건물로 한국역사의 자각의식을 불러일으키는 일제 침략의 실종적 유적이다. 현재는 목포근대역사관으로 이용되고 있다.

목포시에서 재래시장 환경개선 사업으로 옛 동명동어시장을 시설 현대화로 상권을 살리고 원도심의 활성화에 기여하기 위해 33억원을 들여 아케이드와 주차장을 설치해 새롭게 단장하였으며, 종합수산시장은 125개의 점포에 청정 서남해에서 어획한 선어, 홍어, 젓갈, 건어물 등 각종 수산물과, 공영주차장을 갖춘 수산물 전문시물이다.

Chowon is a restaurant specializing in hairtail dishes. It uses only Mokpo hairtail and domestic flower crabs, with its famous dishes including braised hairtail seasoned with over 10 ingredients such as plum sauce, fresh liver, soy sauce, and onions, cooked on a bed of radish with fresh hairtail caught near Mokpo, and spicy flower crab salad made from fresh crab meat. Frequently visited by Mokpo locals, Chowon Restaurant is about a 7-minute walk from Mokpo Station. It is a well-known place featured on VJ Special Forces in 2017, but it does not accept reservations or delivery orders. Known as a master chef's house and one of Mokpo's top restaurants, it serves around 12 side dishes, and the main dishes are prepared in the traditional way with roughly processed ingredients, offering an excellent umami flavor. Adjacent to the restaurant is Mokpo Modern History Museum 1, and Mokpojin History Park is a 5-minute walk away.

Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space is a site that simultaneously showcases the history of the modern trading port established during the opening of the Korean Empire with the installation of the Mokpo Customs Office, as well as the lifestyle history through the Japanese colonial period up to the post-liberation era. It is a valuable area for preservation and utilization, allowing visitors to understand the historical culture and changes in daily life of Mokpo throughout modern and contemporary times. In 2018, it was designated as the nation's first registered cultural heritage on a spatial unit basis.

목포시 갓바위 문화거리에 자리한 '국립해양문화재연구소'는 문화재청 소속기관으로, 우리의 소중한 해양 문화유산을 찾고 알리는 국내 하나뿐인 국립해양박물관이다. 전시관은 지하 1층, 지상 2층 건물로 구성되어 있으며, 총소장품 2,000점에 달한다. 전시실은 제1~제4전시실과 야외전시실 및 특별전시실이 있으며, 바다에 잠들었던 옛 배와 다양한 문화재들, 바다 마을 사람들의 삶과 문화, 우리 배-한선(韓船)의 역사 등을 주제로 꾸몄다. 그리고, 야외 해변에는 수상전시관이 조성되어 있는데, 선조들의 해양문화와 발자취가 담긴 문화재를 보면서 그들이 어떻게 바다를 이용하고 개척 하였는가를 느낄 수 있다.

Gatbawi, one of the eight scenic spots of Mokpo, is named because it looks like two monks wearing traditional bamboo hats (satgat). Jungbawi is said to be where a great ascetic monk once lived. There are various legends about Gatbawi, including one where a highly enlightened ascetic monk, resting briefly while crossing the Yeongsan River on his way to Nakbudo’s Dak Island, placed his satgat and staff down, which then became Gatbawi. Another legend tells of a young man in ancient Mokpo who, neglecting his sick father to earn money, returned too late and deeply regretted it, fasting for days in apology while wearing a satgat, eventually turning into the rock. A maritime pedestrian bridge along the Yeongsan River allows visitors to enjoy views above the water. The bridge rises about 1 meter at high tide and lowers following the tide, offering beautiful night scenery. It also serves as a natural learning site demonstrating rock erosion by waves and currents, making it highly educational.
