The Space Cherished by Joseon Kings
Seoul Jongno-gu · Today’s itinerary

The Space Cherished by Joseon Kings

The representative palace of our country is Gyeongbokgung. However, the one listed by UNESCO is Changdeokgung. Changdeokgung is the palace where kings from Taejong's reign onward stayed more frequently and longer than at Gyeongbokgung. Starting from here, it is a good course to see all the cultural heritage sites in prime locations of Seoul, including the Folk Museum.

During the late Joseon dynasty, when domestic affairs were chaotic, the country’s fate was in jeopardy amid power struggles among major powers like Japan and China. After the 1905 Eulsa Treaty in King Gojong’s 42nd year, Japan effectively took control of Korea’s sovereignty and attempted economic invasion policies. One example was seizing management rights of Namdaemun Market, and as an economic breakthrough, Gwangjang Market in Jongno was opened. This marked the birth of Korea’s first permanent market in 1905. Originally, the market was to be created by covering the space between Gwanggyo (Wide Bridge) and Janggyo (Long Bridge), and named 'Gwangjang (廣長)' meaning 'wide and long' after the bridges' names. After relocating to Baeogae-ro, the market kept the Korean pronunciation but changed the Hanja to 'Gwangjang (廣藏)', meaning 'widely gathering and preserving.' At its opening, the main traded goods were agricultural and marine products and anthracite coal, brought by horse carts from Gapyeong, Ttukseom, Icheon, Cheorwon, etc., serving a primitive market function. Today, over 100 years later, the principal traded items include silk, fabrics (hanbok), textiles (suits and dresses), women's clothing, curtain fabrics, bedding, embroidery, lacquerware with mother-of-pearl, kitchenware, imported goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, dried seafood, ceremonial items, fish, meat, and vegetables, making it a comprehensive market with significant trade volume. The busiest area in Gwangjang Market is the food alley formed at the street where the East Gate, North Gate 2, and South Gate 1 meet. This food alley attracts all ages, from students to middle-aged and elderly. It is currently designated as a global tourist route and proudly serves as a stopover for many foreign tourists traveling in Korea.
