Roaming through Sanghajodo Islands

You can visit both Sangjodo and Hajodo by taking a boat from Paengmok Port. Hajodo is the main island of the Jodo archipelago, named because 154 large and small islands float like flocks of birds. Hajodo houses administrative facilities including the Jodo-myeon office and branch, as well as commercial establishments like inns, restaurants, tailor shops, beauty salons, and photo studios. The charm of Hajodo lies in the beautiful harmony between sea and land. Visitors can see islands scattered like beads over the blue sea, fishing boats gliding silently on the calm, lake-like water, and just turning their head reveals a peaceful rural farming landscape. The Hajodo lighthouse, one of Korea's few manned lighthouses built in 1909, stands 48 meters tall at the island's tip. Next to the lighthouse, alongside the Manmulsang rock, the scenery is so beautiful it is a must-see spot for travelers. Camping is possible at Sinjeon Beach and Morakkae Beach, and the nearby anchovy fishing grounds of Jukhangdo and the views from Singeumsan Mountain offer special joy in island sightseeing of the closely gathered islets resembling flocks of birds. From Hajodo, you can cross over to Sangjodo via Jododaegyo Bridge and also reach Nabaedo via Nabaedaegyo Bridge.

The route between Jindo and Hajodo has strong currents, and Hajodo Lighthouse serves as a guide for the safe navigation of ships passing through this area. It is also responsible for safely guiding vessels through Jangjuk Waterway, a key channel connecting the southern and western coasts, with the lighthouse's light reaching up to 39 km. Built in February 1909, Hajodo Lighthouse stands 12 meters tall atop a steep 48-meter rocky cliff, impressing passing ships and tourists alike. The site combines Hajodo's beautiful nature with dramatic cliffs to create a stunning landscape. Visitors can observe the cluster of islands floating on the blue sea and fishing boats silently gliding over the calm waters like a lake, while turning their gaze reveals a tranquil rural scene. The sunsets viewed from Sinjeon and Morakkae beaches are exceptionally beautiful, and the nearby anchovy fishing grounds of Jukhangdo and the small islets gathered like flocks of birds make island travel especially enjoyable.

It was also called Jeongjudo because during the Baekje era, ships stopped here when traveling to Jeju Island. Sangjodo has Yulmok and Maengseong ferry terminals. Around Jindo, there are various islands including Hyeoldo, Gasahyeoldo, Baegyado, Sangjodo, Hajodo, Gwanmaedo, Dokgeo-do, Jeopdo, and Geumho-do. The scenery of the archipelago viewed from the 'Sebang Sunset Observatory,' said to be the most beautiful on the Jindo coastal road, is stunning. The sunset seen here is fantastic. At dusk, the spectacular sunset sinking between the islands dyes the surrounding blue sky a redder color than autumn leaves. The Central Meteorological Observatory even selected this as the 'best sunset viewing spot' in the southernmost part of the Korean Peninsula. This coastal road is the best archipelago drive course in Korea, offering panoramic views of the beautiful islands of the archipelago. You can enjoy driving while breathing the fresh air exhaled from many forests and clean seas.
