It is composed of the western peak called Mobong (Mother Peak) and the eastern peak called Bubong (Father Peak). During the Silla period, it was called Seodasan, during the Goryeo period Yongchulsan, and in the early Joseon period Sokgeumsan, before finally being named Maisan, meaning 'Horse Ear Mountain' due to its resemblance to a horse's ear. It was designated a provincial park of Jeollabuk-do on October 16, 1979, designated as Jeollabuk-do Local Monument No. 66 on August 24, 1983, and upgraded to National Scenic Site No. 12 on October 31, 2003.

Visible from any direction in Jinan-eup, Maisan has four different names depending on the season: In spring, the two peaks emerging through the mist look like twin sailboats, called Dotdaebong; in summer, the thick foliage resembles dragon horns, called Yonggakbong; in autumn, the maple-colored shape looks like horse ears, called Maibong; and in winter, with no snow accumulated, it looks like an ink-dipped brush tip, called Munpilbong. In Maisan, there is Eunsusa, where King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty prayed for 100 days while returning from Seongsusan in Imsil-gun, and Tapsa, which has about 80 stone pagodas said to withstand strong winds and rain. In addition, the 3km entrance road is lined with cherry trees forming a tunnel, attracting tourists every year to see the cherry blossoms.
Sayangje is a reservoir located in Danyang-ri, Jinan-eup, completed in October 1962 to supply agricultural water. This reservoir is also called Sayangdong Bangjuk, and the name Sayang refers to Danyang-ri being formed on the foothills of Maisan, with the north side open and sunlight bypassing the village. The surface of Sayangje reflects the image of Maisan, making it famous as a photo spot. Sayangje includes an ecological park with a walking deck and floating fountains. Four fountains harmonized with nighttime lighting emit diverse charms.
My Garden was created on the site next to the Jinan History Museum. Different flowers bloom in each season: tulips and daffodils (bulb plants) in spring, hydrangeas in summer, and pink muhly grass and silver grass in autumn and winter, creating a full seasonal atmosphere. Various rest areas where tourists can relax comfortably have been established, including Myibong Maze Garden, Gosatgil Maze Garden, Stone Pagoda Park, and a stone pagoda stacking experience site.
