Jinan Hyanggyo was established in 1414 (the 14th year of King Taejong) to enshrine the spirit tablets of virtuous Confucian scholars and to provide education and moral guidance to the local people. It was destroyed during the Imjin War and rebuilt in 1601 (the 34th year of King Seonjo), then relocated to its current site in 1636 (the 14th year of King Injo). The extant buildings include Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, Beonandang, and Seojae. Daeseongjeon houses the spirit tablets of the Five Sages, the Four Sages of the Song Dynasty, and 18 revered Confucian scholars of Korea. This hall is dedicated to memorial rites for Confucius and Confucian scholars from China and Korea. Architecturally, it has three bays in front and two bays on the side, with a gabled roof shaped like the character 人 from a side view. Spring and autumn ancestral rites are held here. During the Joseon era, the state provided land, books, and slaves, and one instructor taught 30 students, but after the Reform of 1894, the educational function ceased; rites are held in spring and autumn, and incense offerings are made on the first and fifteenth of each lunar month. The collection includes 95 types of printed books in 187 volumes and 11 types of manuscripts in 11 volumes, totaling 106 types in 198 volumes. Among these, Hyangan, Yuan, Cheonggeumrok, and Moseonggyean are important sources for local history research. Daeseongjeon is designated as Jeollabuk-do Cultural Heritage Material No.14. Currently, the hyanggyo is managed by one Jeongyo and one Jangui.
