Jinan, along with Muju and Jangsu, is a representative plateau area commonly referred to as 'Mujinjang.' Being a region surrounded by mountains, exchanges and distribution of goods among residents were difficult, leading to the development of a five-day market. Jinan Plateau Market was reorganized into a building-type market in February 2010 and operates as a permanent market, but a five-day market is still held every 4th and 9th day. On market days, about one hundred shops open, creating a lively market atmosphere. Known for ginseng, chili peppers, and medicinal herbs, the market sells many specialty products as well as daily necessities.
