Jeonbuk National University is a national university located in Geumam-dong, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbukteukbyeoljachi-do, boasting the most Korean-style campus in the country. The Jeonju campus built its main buildings in a hanok style to create a culturally sympathetic campus with the famous Jeonju Hanok Village, and hanok architecture can be seen throughout the campus. The main gate of Jeonbuk National University is a hanok pavilion form, with beautiful traditional hanok curves and classical beauty, making it an essential stop on a trip to Jeonju. Among these, Geonji Square, meaning "the place where the sky stays," is the central plaza of Jeonbuk National University, created on the former 12,000㎡ fountain site, featuring a traditional pavilion, screen sculptures, Cheongunjeong, terraces, and rest areas harmonized with beautiful hanok curves. The traditional pavilion Munhoe-ru, built in the center of Geonji Square, was established in 2018 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the university's founding. It is the first hanok building applying the Baekje architectural style Ha-ang (하앙식) technique, unique in the thousand-year-old city of Jeonju, and was built over a pond like Deoksugung Gyeonghoeru. The Ha-ang technique is a traditional hanok method that maximizes the beauty of the eaves line. This pavilion towering over Geonji Square has become a symbol of Jeonbuk National University. Munhoe-ru is loved not only by Jeonbuk National University students but also by local residents, serving as a resting place throughout the four seasons with its elegant traditional beauty harmonizing with the pond. Especially at night, illuminated lighting accentuates the traditional hanok architecture's charm, making it known as a nighttime attraction.

Jeonju has been a large settlement in the Honam region since the Mahan period, and its name originated from Wonsanseong of Mahan. It was the capital of Later Baekje for over 40 years, and during the Joseon Dynasty, it was renamed Wansan Yusubu because it was the hometown of Lee Seong-gye's ancestors. One of the impressive sights in Jeonju is the lotus flowers blooming in Deokjin Park. The Deokjin Park pond is a famous feature of Jeonju. Located on Paldal-ro leading from Jeonju IC to downtown, Deokjin Park was formed from a natural lake dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty and was designated and developed as an urban park in April 1978, along with Chwi-hyangjeong, making it a historic site. The 45,000-pyeong grounds include a pond occupying two-thirds of the south, a boat dock in the north, and a suspension bridge crossing east to west dividing them. Walking across the arched suspension bridge in the center of the pond allows one to immerse in the vast scenery. After extensive renovations completed by 1998, the park features mounding construction reminiscent of a small hill in Hyangchon, traditional pavilions, and a swamp of iris plants enhancing its historical character. Artificial waterfalls and wooden bridges were installed to create eco-friendly facilities suited to citizens’ sensibilities. On the Dano Festival, women traditionally wash their hair early in the pond water to pray for a healthy year, making the Dano Changpo Water Festival famous.
