[The Roof of Jeongseon where Jeongseon Arirang Flows] It is no exaggeration to say that the rugged high mountain ranges of Pyeongchang and Jeongseon counties in Gangwon Province are centered around Gariwangsan, which serves as the roof of this region. Gariwangsan, the main mountain of Jeongseon, was originally called Galwangsan (葛王山) because it was said to be the place where Galwang (King of Kudzu) hid to escape a rebellion. During the Japanese colonial period, it came to be called Gariwangsan (加里王山). At Mahangchi, the saddle between Jungwangsan (1,376.1m) to the west of the summit and the main peak, there is a monument inscribed with 'Gangneungbu Samsan Bongpyo (江陵府蔘山封標),' the only one of its kind in Korea. This indicates a restricted area where the general public was prohibited from collecting wild ginseng, showing that Gariwangsan was a major wild ginseng production area during the Joseon Dynasty. From the main peak, the massive mountain range gently extends southeast to Jungbong (1,443m) and Habong (1,380.3m).
