Chungnyeolsa Shrine was built to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who served as the magistrate of Jeongeup during the Joseon Dynasty. The shrine was constructed through a nationwide initiative starting in 1949 and was completed in April 1963. Every year on April 28, the anniversary of his birth, a memorial rite is held. Admiral Yi was appointed magistrate of Jeongeup in 1589 (22nd year of King Seonjo) and served until 1591 (24th year), when he was promoted to Commander of the Left Jeolla Naval District in February of that year. In 1592 (25th year), during the Imjin War when the country faced grave peril, he built the turtle ship and achieved great victories against Japanese forces in numerous naval battles. He died at age 54 on November 19, 1598 (31st year), hit by enemy gunfire during the Battle of Noryang. To honor his spirit of patriotism and loyalty, the shrine was built at the site of a former shrine during the Japanese occupation with heartfelt public donations, enshrining his portrait.

Located in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do, Chungnyeolsa Temple was established as a shrine to embody the spirit of Admiral “Chungmugong” (honorific title in military) Yi Sun-Sin. He was a great national hero who led the Korean navy to victory in many naval battles using innovative ‘turtle ships’ during the Imjin War (1592-1598). Situated in the heart of Gumisan Mountain overlooking the city of Jeongeup, the temple is the location of a memorial ceremony held every 28th of April, the birthday of Admiral Yi. The ceremony is meant to pay tribute to the memory of the naval hero and his irreproachable service to the city. Yi Sun-Sin had been appointed as reeve of Jeongeup in 1589 but soon after in 1591 he left the post to work as the chief naval officer of the Jeolla region.

Chungmugong Park is located on Seonghwangsan Mountain just east of Jeongeup City Hall, and within the park is Chungnyeolsa Shrine. Chungnyeolsa Shrine was built to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Chungmugong, who served as Jeongeup-hyeon governor during the Joseon Dynasty. The establishment of the shrine began in 1949 through a nationwide initiative and was completed in April 1963. Since then, a birthday memorial ceremony has been held every January 28, the admiral's birth date. He was appointed Jeongeup-hyeon governor in the 22nd year of King Seonjo's reign (1589) and served until 1591, after which he was promoted to Commander of the Left Jeolla Naval Command in February of the same year. To commemorate his virtue and patriotic spirit, the shrine was built on the site of a shrine from the Japanese occupation period, funded by the sincere donations of citizens, where his spirit portrait is enshrined.

전라북도 정읍시의 주산으로, 정읍시가지 북쪽을 감싸고 있다. 고당산에서 뻗어 내린 산줄기가 칠보산을 거쳐 성황산으로 이어지고, 성황산에서 다시 두락봉로 이어진다. 예전의 산기슭에 성황사(성황당)가 있어 성황산이라고 불렀는데 동국여지승람과 1888년 고종 25년 간행된 정읍 지에는 등산이라고 표기되어 있으며, 매산 또는 매봉이라고도 하였다. 서쪽 기슭에 충무공 이순신의 사당인 충렬사와 독립운동가 박준승의 묘, 한국전쟁 때 희생된 영령들을 기리는 충혼탑 등으로 구성된 충무공원이 있다. 성황산에는 3가지의 등산코스가 있으며 등산하기 편하도록 나무 데크로 되어 있으며 정상에서는 정읍 시내가 한눈에 들어오며 산아래 쪽에 용호 약수터가 있다. 성황산은 정읍 시내에 위치하고 있어 정읍 전통의 음식 맛을 느낄 수 있는 곳이 주변에 다양하다.
