Jeju Olle Trail

The Jeju Olle Trail is a walking travel course in Jeju Island that connects a series of alleyways into one long route. Comprising 27 courses and totaling 437 km, the trail vividly reveals Jeju's hidden inner beauty that is not easily seen from the outside. Walking along the path, you can encounter the orange tangerine flower fields at Sincheon Sea Ranch and Soesokkak, where freshwater and seawater meet, a famous spot in Jeju. Just as Jeju shows different appearances in every season and moment, the more slowly you walk, the more you can see.

Jeju 4·3 Peace Park is a peace and human rights memorial park dedicated to remembering and commemorating the civilian massacre and tragic lives resulting from the Jeju 4·3 Incident, and to opening a future of reconciliation and coexistence. The creation of Jeju 4·3 Peace Park was part of a communal reparation for the Jeju 4·3 Incident. Following the proclamation of the 4·3 Special Act (2000), steps included land acquisition, basic construction planning research, design competitions, construction, and production and installation of exhibits, leading to its opening on March 28, 2008. Within the park are the Jeju 4·3 Peace Memorial Hall, memorial altar, memorial tower, and columbarium. The memorial altar is where tributes to the 4·3 victims are held year-round, and there is a separate hall dedicated to the spirit tablets honoring them. The columbarium houses remains uncovered during the 4·3 excavation project, currently holding 380 remains. Each memorial stone records the victim’s name, gender, and age at the time. The Jeju 4·3 Peace Memorial Hall features six special exhibition halls: The first hall presents a history exhibit based on a natural cave used as a shelter by residents; the second hall tells the story of six civilians who died during the Liberation Day March 1st celebrations under the theme of liberation and frustration; the third hall deals with the armed uprising and rejection of division on April 3, 1948; the fourth hall covers the massacre; and the fifth and sixth halls depict the process of overcoming wounds through efforts to reveal the truth and display visitor reflections after viewing.

Shinpung Sincheon Sea Ranch offers an open sea view and is located along Jeju Olle Trail Course 3. It used to be land owned by residents where horses, cows, and other livestock were allowed to graze, but now the ranch functions no longer exist. Since the 1980s, it has been used as a drying yard by pouring tangerine peels every year. The sight of the wide area covered with orange tangerine peels has become a spectacular attraction for tourists. This ranch, with its expansive grassland and wide ocean vista, is a beloved section among Olle trail walkers.

Soesokkak in Hahyo-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Island, was originally called So-dun because it resembled a lying cow. It was named Soesokkak because freshwater flowing from Hyodoncheon and seawater meet here, forming a deep pool. 'Soe' means cow, 'so' means pool, and 'kkak' means edge. Soesokkak is a valley formed by solidified lava that has flowed down, creating a fun and unique terrain as the name suggests. It is one of the hidden scenic spots of Seogwipo Chilship-ri, featuring deep waters, lava rock formations, and pine forests in harmony, creating beautiful scenery. Hahyo-dong, where Soesokkak is located, sits at the southern foot of Hallasan and is famous as a main producing area for tangerines, with the village filled with a fragrant citrus scent. Nearby attractions include the Jusangjeolli Cliff, Jungmun Beach, and Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, making it great for visiting together.

Jeongbang Waterfall, one of the three major waterfalls in Jeju Island along with Cheonjiyeon and Cheonjiyeon, is located southeast of the center of Seogwipo-si. It is the only coastal waterfall in the East that falls directly into the sea. The majestic sound of the waterfall and the cascading water reflect sunlight, creating a mystical and enchanting scene where a seven-color rainbow blends with the blue sea. Traditionally called Jeongbanghabok (正房夏瀑), it was considered one of the ten scenic spots of Yeongju. There is a story that the first emperor of China's Qin dynasty sent Xu Fu to Halla Mountain, one of the three sacred mountains of the East, to find the elixir of immortality; although he failed to find it, he engraved the words 'Seobulgwaji(徐市過之)' on the cliff of Jeongbang Waterfall and returned west. On the cliffs rising along the beach, old pine trees extend their branches over the sea as if about to fall, surrounded by dense various trees.

Sakye refers to a famous coastal cliff formed along a clean beach and blue water. Sakye Beach is a small, quiet beach located just below Sanbangsan Mountain where swimming is not allowed. Walking along Olle Trail Course 10, you can see Sanbangsan, Hallasan, and Yongmeori Coast all at once from Sakye Beach. Sakye Beach is well known not only for its unique quiet atmosphere but also because of the many famous nearby tourist attractions. It is also the southernmost beach in Korea and features unique volcanic stones and rock layers visible only at low tide. These holes formed in the rocks are called marine potholes, which resemble craters on alien planets or the moon. This rock formation was created by volcanic eruptions, and the various large and small holes formed by wind and waves have become a very exotic and impressive spot for visitors to Jeju. Among fishing enthusiasts, it is recognized as a prime black porgy fishing spot on the southwestern coast of Jeju, with many fishermen renting boats from Sakye Port near the beach to fish at Hyeongje Island. The nearby village is quiet but has small cafes scattered throughout, making it a nice place to stop and rest briefly.

On the way up to the observatories, you can also see artificial caves made during the Japanese occupation period as military bases for the Japanese army. The area alternates between wide flatlands and stairs, making it pleasant to take a stroll while overlooking the coast and walking a full circle.

Altteureu Airfield, meaning the 'field' at the foot of Songaksan, Dansan, Moseulbong, and Sanbangsan, was a military facility used by Japan during the Japanese colonial era as a forward base for the Second Sino-Japanese War, along with Jeongtteureu Airfield. The airfield includes preserved facilities such as the command building, control tower, anti-aircraft gun positions, and hangars, all open for visits. It was constructed to prepare for the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Nanjing bombing and is said to have been built by forcibly mobilizing residents of the Moseulpo area for about 10 years to conceal and maintain Japanese fighter planes. Kamikaze pilot training, a drastic Japanese military tactic, also reportedly took place here. There are 20 hangars scattered in the wide fields, with 19 preserved in their original circular shape. Seotal Oreum, where the hangars are located, is an emotionally painful site as a massacre area during the Jeju 4.3 Incident, where a large crater was formed by an explosion in a bomb warehouse built by Japan. After liberation, it is said that the site was used to massacre ordinary people detained as preliminary arrests. A memorial for the Seotal Oreum 4.3 victims stands here. Visitors can experience the war and Korea's tragic modern history in this vast field. While currently military land owned by the Ministry of National Defense, the area is leased as farmland and cultivated.
