Chungcheong-do is also called Hoseo region, meaning 'west of the lake,' where the lake refers to Uirimji. Uirimji is a very old and famous reservoir. As a Chungcheongbuk-do monument, Uirimji was built in the Samhan period and was originally called Imji. It is said that during King Jinheung of Silla’s reign, the musician Ureuk blocked a stream and built a dam, and about 700 years later, local governor Park Uirim rebuilt it more firmly. The reservoir has a lakeside circumference of 1.8 km, a full surface area of 151,470㎡, a storage volume of 6,611,891㎡, and a depth of 8-13m, irrigating 289.4 jeongbo of farmland. Along with Byeokgolje of Gimje and Susanje of Miryang, it is one of the Samhan period water management facilities, with its sluice gate built of earthenware, providing valuable data for studying ancient agricultural technology. Currently, it is a scenic spot in Jecheon, where Yeonghojeong, built in the 7th year of Sunjo (1807), Gyeongholu Pavilion, built in 1948, centuries-old pine and weeping willow trees, and a 30m natural waterfall enhance the landscape.
Cheongpung Lake Cable Car is a famous spot in Jecheon where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Cheongpung Lake. It operates a round-trip 2.3km route from Multaeri in Cheongpung-myeon to the summit of Bibongsan. Traveling at an average speed of 5m/s, it takes about 10 minutes to reach the peak, which is named after a phoenix bird guarding its eggs and taking flight. Bibongsan, located in the center of Cheongpung Lake at an altitude of 531m, offers a spectacular view reminiscent of a sea of countless islands from the summit. It is the first cable car in Korea to operate to the summit, allowing children and elderly visitors to comfortably enjoy the scenic beauty of Cheongpung Lake by cable car.
Jeongbangsa Temple, a branch temple of Beopjusa of the Jogye Order located on the ridge of Sinseonbong at the foot of Geumsusan Mountain at an elevation of 1,016m, is a thousand-year-old temple said to have been founded by Uisangdaesa in the Silla period. From the temple, visitors can enjoy views of Cheongpung Lake and the surrounding mountains, evoking a fairyland-like scenery and a sense of nature's wonder. A rock cliff covers one-third of the temple's roof, whose grandeur and unique appearance inspire awe at the greatness of nature. Within the temple grounds are the main hall, monks' quarters, and the Hyeonhye Gate. The main hall, built in 1825, is a wooden tile-roofed building with 12 kan, and the monks' quarters have 5 kan. The Hyeonhye Gate, also called Iljumun, is the temple's main gate and is a one-kan wooden gate. Inside the main hall is a standing wooden Avalokitesvara (Gwaneumbosal) statue, the principal Buddha, measuring 60cm in height and 30cm shoulder width, with a painting behind it. The wooden Avalokitesvara statue and relics enshrined inside Jeongbangsa's main hall are typical examples of mid-Joseon period bodhisattva statues.
