In January 1894, the Donghak Peasant Army, including Jeon Bongjun who suffered under the tyranny of the Gobu county magistrate Jo Byeong-gap, rose up to overthrow feudal oppression and foreign harassment. By early April, thousands of peasants led by Jeon Bongjun, Son Hwajung, and Kim Gaenam gathered at Baeksan, raising the banners of anti-feudal retribution and anti-foreign resistance, and went to war against the government army. On the night of April 6, the peasant army won a fierce battle at Hwangtohyeon against the Jeolla provincial army. This battle was the first victory for the peasants against the government forces. Then, on April 22, Jeon Bongjun’s main force advanced to the Hwangryong River area in Jangseong, luring Hong Gyehun's army stationed in Jeonju to Hwangryong, achieving another great victory. The Hwangryong Battle was a fight where the Donghak Peasant Army, led by Jeon Bongjun, clashed with government forces here in an effort to capture Jeonju, marking a significant victory when they defeated elite troops from Seoul. Riding this momentum, the peasant army soon captured Jeonju Fortress, which became the decisive turning point leading to the signing of the Jeonju Truce that accepted the demands of the peasants. This site, once called Kkachineungseon, is the very battle site of Hwangryong. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Donghak Revolution, a Donghak Memorial Park was established here through nationwide donation campaigns to promote Donghak ideas and serve as a historical education site for future generations.
