Introduction

[A Korean utopia with abundant mineral springs and shaded valleys] This mountain offers the best environment for plant life in this region. It features a rich soil-covered mountain with various trees such as broom trees, bokjagi, pine trees, wild cherry trees, and manbyungcho. The area resembles an arboretum with diverse tree species and plants including bracken, gwanchung, umbrella vegetables, gomchwi, surichwi, eolleji, yeollyeongcho, yangjikkot, and holabibaramkkot. On the broad, flat ridge resembling a hippopotamus's back, the northern foot has shaded valleys called Jeokgari and Achimgari. Inside Jeokgari, shaped like an abalone shell and blocked by Ipokpo and Jeopokpo waterfalls, lies a flat plain. The Achimgari valley, curved like a bow, has no path except via Bangdong Mineral Spring Back Ridge. To the south, the Naerimcheon stream flows along the mountain's base. The dark Uduuni valley, shaped like a paper funnel, remains shaded despite nine years of logging. The clear water from this darkness flows into Naerimcheon, then westward, turning north and southwest, creating eight secluded settlements in three villages and five branches. While not spectacular, this mountain is very suitable for sheltering people during turmoil, with clear water and a warm, profound nature.

Visitor guide

Getting there

The starting point is Hongcheon. There are 15 local buses and direct buses at one-hour intervals to Hyeon-ri near Jeokgari. To reach Misan-ri, get off at Sangnam and take a taxi. For Saldun as the trailhead, use the direct bus (8 times) or local bus (4 times) to Naemyeon. Buses to Hongcheon depart 52 times daily from Dong Seoul Terminal and 41 times from Sangbong Terminal. Outside Gangwon Province, buses are available from Busan, Ulsan, Pohang, Daegu, Andong, Daejeon, Jeonju, Incheon, Suwon, Ansan, Goyang, and Uijeongbu. Route options: 1) Like going to Seoraksan, take National Road 44 → Local Road 444 at Hongcheon town → Local Road 451 at Sangnam → National Road 31 → Local Road 418 at Hyeon-ri. Continuing on Road 44, one can switch to National Road 56 at Gurun-ri or Local Road 451 at Cheoljeong Checkpoint, but all routes converge on Road 31. 2) For private lodges, turn off at Sangnam onto Local Road 446, then at Namjeondong cross the bridge over Naerimcheon and ascend the slope. 3) To reach Saldun Lodge, take National Road 56 to Naemyeon, then at Gwangwon-ri follow Local Road 446 along Naerimcheon.
