Wondaeri Birch Forest, also called the Whispering Birch Forest, is a natural ecological tourism site. From 1974 to 1995, 690,000 birch trees were planted over 138 hectares, forming this forest. It has seven trails, a forest classroom, an observatory, an ecological pond, an Indian house, wooden bridges, and stairs, offering forest bathing and healing experiences. The forest path starts at the birch forest information center at the entrance. There are two routes: Wonjeong Forest Road, an 80-minute walk, and Wondae Forest Road, about an hour. Hiking the trails leads to a dense forest of birch trees over 20 years old. The white trunks and shining leaves make the forest look like it is covered in snow, and the birch trees stretching skyward create an exotic atmosphere. Visitors can choose from trails of different lengths and difficulties within the forest. The most popular is Course 1 (Birch Course), about 0.9 km long and taking about 50 minutes, which passes through a concentrated area of pure white birch growth. In winter, the snow-covered forest and white birch trees are popular photo spots. Families with children can also enjoy various nature-themed activities such as the forest classroom and Indian house at the Children's Forest Experience Center.
Hwaamsa Temple is a temple located in Sinpyeong-ri, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, founded in the 5th year of King Hyegong of Silla, the 36th ruler, in 769 by Monk Jinpyo. It has experienced multiple destructive fires and reconstructions. It was destroyed in the 1st year of King Injo of Joseon (1623) but was rebuilt in the 3rd year (1625). In the 1st year of King Gojong (1864), it was relocated to below Subawi Rock and renamed 'Suamsa (穗岩寺).' The name changed back to 'Hwaamsa (禾岩寺)' in 1912. The temple suffered fire damage again during the Korean War, after which only the main hall was restored. In preparation for the 1991 World Jamboree, the existing buildings were demolished and completely rebuilt to the present state. Currently, Hwaamsa has structures including Iljumun Gate, Daeungjeon Hall, Samseonggak Shrine, Myeongbujeon Hall, and temple lodgings. There are also groups of stupas (budo) and some stone steps believed to date from the late Joseon period. A six-panel folding screen depicting Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, bestowed by King Jeongjo, was once housed here, but its whereabouts after liberation are unknown. Records say there were 15 stupas including the Jugamdang stupa, and 16 portraits including those of Jinpyo-dang. The temple sits in the pure Hwaam Valley on the slopes of Sinseonbong Peak, surrounded by picturesque views of Subawi Rock and Ulsan Rock. Nearby are Sinseonbong, the World Jamboree site, and condominiums, offering many attractions to explore. There is also a traditional tea house within the temple where enjoying traditional tea in the tranquil temple setting can be a special experience. ◎ Travel information to experience the charm of Hallyu – Variety show 'Summer Vacation' Hwaamsa Temple was featured as the place where actors Jung Yu-mi and Choi Woo-shik experienced a templestay in the tvN variety program 'Summer Vacation.' They spent a healing time finding peace of mind through various temple experiences such as Buddhist services and tea conversations with monks. This quiet place blending with nature is recommended as a unique travel destination to rest body and mind.
Haesan, named as the mountain where the sun rises, is a beautiful mountain with an elevation of 1194m. It is also called Ilsan (日山) or Horangisan (Tiger Mountain). Because it is located in a civilian control zone, access was previously restricted for travelers, but now anyone can visit. From the Haesan Observatory on Haesan, you can see the panoramic view of Paroho Lake located nearby. It takes only about one hour by car from Chuncheon to Haesan, so many travelers come from Seoul, and some enthusiasts even arrive by bicycle.
