Gongjak Mountain⛰️ 887 m

Introduction

[A famous mountain in Hongcheon embracing the scenic Suta Valley] It is said that a mountain resembling an animal has spiritual energy. Yeongchwisan, Sajasan, and Seoraksan, whose summit was called Bongjeong, are examples. Therefore, the monk Jajang buried sacred relics at their foothills. However, if a mountain with such relics was discovered after the relics were all gone, one could only be amazed. Gongjak Mountain is a representative case of this. Following the Gun-eop Stream, which collects water from the entire eastern part of Hwacheon-myeon on both sides of the Hongcheon River, the mountain's peak unmistakably resembles a bird. Its two wings spread to the boundaries of Naesampo-ri and Eungbongsan. The mountain ridges west of Angongjakjae twist like a whirlpool, waving a long tail toward the Hongcheon River. One can feel the regret of the mountain appraiser who discovered this. It is better known for the Suta Temple Valley forming its southern boundary. This is because water flowing through the fields enters the mountain, creating a scenic landscape. Although it lies horizontally, there is the 40-meter-long Gongjak Waterfall and a historic temple where the treasure (Wolinseokbo, treasures No. 745 and 746) was found, so it has all the features. How could this not be called a famous mountain?

Visitor guide

Getting there

The starting point is Hongcheon. There are 52 buses from Dong Seoul Terminal and 41 from Sangbong Terminal. When using Gun-eop-ri as the trailhead, take the slow bus to Eoron, which runs every hour; for Gulun-ri, take the 15 buses to Seongsan, get off at Songjeong, and walk about 2 km. Slow buses run three times each to Suta Temple and Sinbong-ri, and for the entrance to Gongjak Valley, take the three buses to Mulgol and get off at Nocheon Samgeori. Take National Routes 6 and 44, used when going to Seoraksan. For Gulun-ri and Gun-eop-ri (Route 56), just follow the signposts, but for the Dong-myeon area, there are no signposts on the new national road, so enter the town, pass the county office, and follow Local Road 444.
