Hoengseong Folk Market is a traditional market held in the market area of Hoengseong-eup, known nationwide as the best market outside Dongdaemun according to records. On March 1, 1919, the first March 1st Independence Movement in Gangwon-do was held on Hoengseong market day. During the Japanese occupation, Japanese merchants tried to establish commercial dominance, but the Hoengseong merchants and residents united in a boycott movement, preventing the Japanese merchants from gaining a foothold. The market sells Korean beef, deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolata), clean vegetables, wild mountain vegetables, cloud rice cakes, and buckwheat pancakes.
