Samga Hyanggyo was built during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon and was rebuilt in the 4th year of Gwanghae-gun (1612) after being burned down in the Japanese invasions of Korea. In 1826, Jeong Woo-yong moved Daeseongjeon to its current location and renovated Pungwharu and Heunghakdang at that time. Daeseongjeon enshrines memorial tablets of the Five Saints, the Four Virtuous Men of the Song dynasty, and 18 virtuous men of Korea. The overall layout of the buildings is in the Jeonhak-Hu-myo style, with Myeongnyundang, the place for studying, in front and Daeseongjeon, the place for ancestral rites, at the back. Records indicate that there originally were east and west study rooms and a shrine called Dongseo-mu, but these were likely removed as the hyanggyo lost its educational function. Currently, only Pungwharu, which served as both entrance and resting space, Myeongnyundang, Naesammun, the shrine gate, and Daeseongjeon remain in a straight line. On the eastern wall of the hyanggyo are buildings including Jeonsacheong for storing books, a manager's residence, the shrine, and Jae-sil.
